there are several types of home trainers
rollers are old school, cheap and require balance
turbo trainers are often cheap and loud, depending on your budget. resistance is offered by either magnets (cheaper) or hydraulics/fluid (pricier)
all of these require a specific trainer tire so it doesn't blow out / wear out too fast
then there's direct-mount/flywheel trainers, in which the trainer actually replaces the whole rear wheel on your bike, so you don't need any special tires. these are the nicest, quietest and most expensive ones
