Portland has an aerial tram that's open to the public, but its primary purpose is to connect two campuses of a hospital/med school (OHSU). It's only a km long and elevation difference of about 500ft but the commute by car could take almost an hour due to hills and heavy traffic.
Big fan of it but it seems there are really such few places where the system is practical.

You're missing the point: there's aerial trams for leisure and there's aerial trams for transport. Colorado, despite the mountains, doesn't have dense cities built on slopes to warrant aerial trams for transport. These are popular in Latin America because they love building cities on slopes for some reason.

I meant that I believe there is an aerial tram/gondola for transportation there. Most of them are for skiers, but I could swear there's one that links a resort to a town and is free for anyone to use. I could be mistaken, I wasn't able to find anything offhand and I don't remember what city it was in.

LA has been talking about building one to get people from Union Station to Dodger Stadium. It makes a decent amount of sense, there isn't really any other good option for public transit between those two without bulldozing tons of private property or running busses around a convoluted route through roads that are already congested as fuck.

Kind of but it also serves a purpose. The Roosevelt Island tram is a valid transport link to the island. You can take the F train sure but a second option doesn't hurt. I've seen a decent spread of commuters and tourist/leisure trips on it, especially in the summer.

They are cool, but they are very niche. I tried to look for cities in Norway where it could be useful, but I couldn't find any. MAYBE in Oslo from Nationaltheateret, to Filipstad, to Bygdøy, but may be tricky to build, and may not be the best option.
Planners should be aware of it though. In some situations it may be the best solution, but because it's relatively obscure they may end up forgetting about it and not consider it at all.
Even though there are wrong ways to do it. Like in the US "we don't have space for light rail, we have to build metrocables" so then they build an inconventent system above an 8 lane highway where they "didn't have space".

Ankara, Turkey is the closest place to Europe with a cable car with multiple stops similar to the Latin American systems. It has 4 stops. https://www.ego.gov.tr/tr/sayfa/1082/teleferik

There's also Chiatura, Georgia which has 17 decrepit cable car lines. There isn't a defined number on the internet of how many were in operation before the pandemic. These are cool for mountain cities with a lot of elevation changes and steep slopes. Those cities were an underground rapid transit or a viaduct are not feasible options because you have to dig hundreds of meters just to have 2 stations almost at level, and the time getting there is just not worth it. La Paz is a great example of that kind of city. For a normal city is a greater waste of money than a monorail. Because capacity and the evenly distributed distance between stations
