Can someone please explain the appeal of these tiny jets?

For work I have to be a passenger in one regularly and review is:

my boss has a phenom100, but I've been in mustangs too and they're only slightly less shitty.

I know a lot of single engine airplanes and other smaller aircraft got mysteriously cancelled after a stream of "bad luck", then similar products by shady people appeared in their place.

I'm not an a/n/on so I realize my post comes off as elementary, I'm just a pleb that has to fly in these shitboxes for work

So maybe the poor sound isolation is for weight? The seats are inexcusable. I mean I'm not exactly picky either, there is negative lumar support and no way to recline so you end up literally sitting hunched over with a round in your back.

What do you do for work where you get to fly on one of these? I've never been on one but I know JetSuite flies the 100 and 300s and I've always considered catching a deadleg flight for fun.

I work for an engineering firm that inspects oil rig pipes. It's a huge shitbox don't be jealous. I just googled JetSuit and see they charge 4,000/hr for back pain and hearing loss, amazing.

You get many of the advantages of a private jet - goes to whatever airport you want, when you want, no TSA fuckery, impresses clients/friends, doesn't scare normies like planes with propellers do - but in a smaller, cheaper package that can be flown by a solo pilot (bigger planes often require a copilot), uses less fuel, etc. It's a compromise and not the best private jet experience but in a lot of cases, maybe including yours, it's the only cost-effective option other than flying commercial and then driving a rental car hours to the final destination.

The noise issues are probably down to size more than weight. There's just not room for much sound deadening between the inner and outer skins and you're really close to the engines. Making the plane bigger would reduce the sound issues but it'd have a lot of downsides including weight and worse aerodynamics, so it'd burn more fuel, need longer runways, maybe even need bigger engines which might put you right back where you started in terms of noise levels.

Passengers really ought to be wearing headsets on a plane this size, and I'm pretty sure the Phenom 100 has plugins for them at every seat, I'm surprised your company isn't using them.

oh yeah that's the other thing, anytime you fly into a cloud you get the shit beaten out of you. it handles the air like crap, so does the Mustang. cloud = kidney punch

makes sense, thanks. yeah i mean we take off early AM and go to the job site, then turn around and fly home that night. long day, usually like 14 hours, but, that's the one advantage. I just wish it wasn't such a shitbox.

thanks. there is a plugin for headsets i'll ask about them. I should really get some noise cancelling headphones or something, maybe that would suffice. I guess the headsets might let us talk. I mean you can talk but it's pretty frickin' loud, and on landing the sound is so annoying from the engines. I've noticed if I tilt my head toward the center it's a little better, it's like a cabin resonance or something.

oh the other thing that sucks is the pressurization system.

Yeah that's the main advantage of using them instead of normal noise cancelling headphones. They're usually wired so the people in the back can talk to each other without interfering with the pilots too. If the other people you fly with aren't gonna get headsets you may as well just grab some regular NC headphones though, personally I really like the Sony ones.

There are many strategies for reducing noise but none of them are interesting to managers who only want gay sex, cocaine and gibs.
The HondaJet placement of engines is an example. Maybe the Stratos 716 and Cirrus Vision Jet also have less noise since it's one engine on the top or inside an enclosure.
But there are even more options.

There are small changes in the exhaust, engine mount, other ways to insulate besides the usual ones which combine insulation and structural strength, ... dozens of possibilities but they require investing money in R&D instead of wasting it in gold coated dildos or whatever those arabs want.

It has the parachute and it can glide if the engine fails. The failure rate for a properly maintained turbofan is very low, and the low weight probably helps on emergency landings. In real life it is very safe if properly designed, a lot of military aircraft work like this.
And the single engine usually stays in a very strategic position instead of two engines very exposed to external hazards.

You go where you want, when you want, from wherever you want, with complete priority. No flight schedules, no connections, no renting a car to drive 40 miles out of the city (usually). The practicality is all about time efficiency for those who need/can afford it and nothing more.
Everything else like comfort is secondary.

Technically, as PIC you have to pay for 50.1% of the cost of the flight if splitting costs, but if you are doing it for revenue you have to hold a commercial certificate with single engine rating. Some other shit is required, too, but I've been lax on the Part 91 requirement stuff for the past year.
