If an airliner broke up in mid-air and I fell out still strapped to the seat, are my (near impossible) odds of survival better off by ditching the seat? Or is staying in the seat a better option?

Like, out of the seat you can fall like a skydiver to slow down more, but the seat also creates a lot of drag too. Also out of the seat you can absorb the impact with your legs, but the seat has cushions and probably an aluminum frame under it that can also absorb impact. The seat also makes it harder to maneuver yourself to a more favorable landing spot, but being in the seat might be able to keep things like branches or rocks from impaling you should you happen to hit them.

Also, just general transportation safety thread.
