I have a 36H alfine 11spd hub and i wanna put it on a 650c rim and i can only find locally 32H drillings.

How fucked am I? I'm going to draw everything up to check spoke sizes and roll with the sheldon brown 36hub 32wheel lacing process (approximately 3 cross)

My advice would be to do it properly with the correct number of holes. Why would you deliberately build something substandard from the beginning?

it's not really substandard IMO, its just more difficult / less symmetric, possibly requiring a few different spoke lengths. I also don't have many other options in the 650c size, and i'm not buying a new IGH just to have 32H.

I could possibly make an adaptor plate that mounts on the old rim and at a wider diameter has 32 holes drilled. But realistically none of this provides any real benefit besides making the lacing easier. It would unnoticeably effect the strength of the wheel.

The wheel you've drawn has radial spokes, this won't work out for a backwheel. The spokes need to be tangential to the hub, so the hub can pull on the spokes. As the others said, either buy a new rim or a different hub instead of wasting time on this botch.

that is an optical trick due to the large ehub pictured in the diagram

with my hub or any normal sized hub this lacing pattern is similar in angles to a standard 3 cross.

this would all be solved if i could get away with a fatter rim since 650b's are sold in 36H, or obv with a 700c

this tight spot is the result of a particular build that is a mix of parts that i've been gifted / had lying around (since im not made of money)

if i do put a brake on the rear it will be a disc since there's a spline on the hub. So 26"/559 would do the job

i want it to be for road use so i ideally want an inner rim width of around 14mm

most 26"/559mm are MTB / bmx etc and are like 19-23mm inner rim width

oh and also there are a handful of rims that fit this category that i can find online, however theyre all 24H/32H so they dont solve my problem of needing 36H. I never realised just how out of fashion it has become for road bikes over the last half decade

I don't think there is any reason to want such a narrow rim even for road. My road 700c wheels are 17c and even that is considered very narrow these days. I'd happily trade them for 20+ wide ones.
Lots of 36 spoke 559 XC rims around, 19-20c like they used to be in the 90s...

Would you have any 26"/559 rim recommendations for road usage - i'd prefer a rim weight under 500g, i dont mind about the cross section so long as its tubular

Nothing specific, from what I've seen the options that are still available are very similar. For road use I'd just get the lightest ones you can find for a reasonable price, none of these are going to be very aero. At 36 spokes on the road I don't think you need to worry about durability.
Zac19 is a pretty common one that weighs just around 500g. DT 535 could be better quality but it's also heavier.

That md19 is 650b. That Exal zx 19 is 32 hole. The Mach1 rim seems fine, but it's surprisingly expensive for a basic rim.
