i want to record the vibration of a train track as a train goes over it, where should i put my contact micorphone so it doesn't get destroyed? it's a disc about an inch and diameter and 1 cm thick
i don't know much about trains

As long as your sensor is attached to the rail itself, you should get a good signal. Don't attach to where the wheels will run, they'll just crush the sensor. Don't attach to the spikes or the plates between the rails and the crossties, any joint/connection like that will absorb part

I think the biggest problem will be finding an adhesive that won't fall off. Superglue is what's usually used, but maybe try epoxy. If the glue it too flexible, it will absorb some of the vibration masking what the sensor gets.

Also... just make sure the installation is harmless looking. The last thing you need is for people to get freaked out that there's some weird electronic device attached to the rails

Oh shit, I never thought about that. I was just going to use blu tac like I do when recording other things like lamp posts and bottles in the wind but I suppose I’m gonna need something stronger. My mic is pretty expensive so I don’t want something that will damage it

You said vibration but also said you're using a microphone. Are you looking to get audio of the train, or data for signal processing (like this plot?)

Get a wire brush and scrub the side of the rail before you use glue or blu-tak, you'll get get a pretty good bond that way.

Also, don't put the mike underneath the rail (between ties). The rail moves downwards when a wheel passes over it, it could crush the mic into the ballast rocks

I'm looking to get audio of the train, I'm collecting field recordings of various everyday sounds using unusual recording techniques or microphone placements.

That's kind of the point, it's a contact microphone and the final recording won't sound anything like a train. I imagine it will sound like a low droning down slowly getting louder as the train gets closer

what are you using? a piezo mic is like 25¢. tape it to the track. you'll need a high impedance recording device or impedance converter thing though if you want the best sound

As of right now I'm just making these recordings out of pure interest and curiosity. If I get enough recordings and they're interesting enough to release then I might compile an album of the best ones one day, but as of right now I just wanna know what this kind of stuff sounds like.
If you're interested, this guy does a similar thing where he captures tiny air vibrations and resonances from still objects, pretty cool to think these dark and mysterious sounds are lying within everyday places https://erstwhilerecords.bandcamp.com/album/extract-from-field-recording-archive
