get a new chain and unclamp the cage while you're at it and overhaul the jockey wheels. Scrub every bit totally clean with kerosene, rags and a toothbrush. Assemble with a tiny dab of grease on the bushings and the screw threads.

remember the jockey wheels are different so don't mix them up. The top one should have float (move side to side a little).

I have downtube shifters. They're alright. They work. And they're cheap.

Brifters are good too though. If I had an expensive bike then I'd probably want brifters.

Shifting the FD is rare on mountain stages, friction has and always will be the boss for shifting the FD, and it’s lighter than a STI shifter.

I have gotten used to using the half clicks on Brifters but its not quite as good
are Suntour Power shifters any good ?
