why are cranksets so expensive

what should i get for a single speed?

I'm thinking of buying a used crankset and getting a new sprocket for it at this point in time

but fucking road weenies try to sell their used cranksets for $200

pic related costs more than a fucking used bike with the same crankset on it!

kek thats a lower mid-tier pricing there, especially if you want a good "single speed" crankset that would be a track one.
there are a lot of cheapo "fixie" cranks but they are all shit.
the cheapest good crank i would go with is a miche primato if you are searching for a square taper one but it will cost more than that if you are not in europe.
what bottom bracket are you planning to use?

i'll try and find online information on the frame its an old Cadex CF tube + aluminium lug that someone threw out.

I'm looking for a BB and crankset for it, but I'd like the BB to be eccentric for managing chain tension, which might be impossible to find in the smaller diameter BB. I may resort to machining something myself.

For something old and cool to be collectible it needs to be both in demand and in limited supply.

In your example an AL frame has high demand and high supply.

The prices tend to be somewhat equal to new parts, also expensive.

'building a custom bike' is not just automatically going to be cheap.

if you want good deals on bike parts, you buy bikes locally to strip for parts, or buy parts in person off people locally or at co-ops.
If you want a nice road crank, maybe look for a higher end old road bike in shit tier condition on gumtree, maybe crashed.
Ie, avenues where the seller isn't making any effort to sell it and doesn't necessarily value or know what they have.

it's the lightest/stiffest/easiest to work on/cheapest bb system
and get something old enough to look vaguely classic

this is the same thing, although the ultegra one is lighter, has a nicer finish, and cheaper, and probably better to be shorter on a fixie for pedal clearance. You could try lowball this guy if the other one doesn't pan out.

I would see if you luck into a magic ratio with a chain that is right already before buying the eccentric BB. And if you're not going fixed gear, just run a chain tensioner

i might run something with a coaster/drum brake in the hub, and i feel like chain tensioners for single speeds kindof ruin the aesthetic of the chain configuration.

however I may just try to machine my own eccentric BB, just buying some bearings and turning the threads and bearing bore on a 4 jaw... or i may try to modify the dropouts, both of which would be more work than just paying the money for the eccentric BB, but i'd have the capacity to make something that matches the bike a bit more perhaps.

at this point in time im leaning towards buying something because there's other things that excite me more to do.

chain tensioner looks awful on a svelte drop bar road/track-esque build

I decided to make a frankenbike with a frame I got last year, bought 5 complete bikes and a frameset for the fork, now I have the frankenbike I wanted, a shitbike I built out of the worst parts to beat on, two nice-ish bikes I didn't dare to touch and really should sell already, one and a half wheelsets, two rims, a frame so rusty it's only good as a wheel truing stand, and now I'm rebuilding the bare frame that was robbed of its fork into a nice touring bike (the fork for which is probably stuck somewhere by the suez canal right now). That's just how it goes in the "I'ma gonna build a bike from scratch"land.

true, ghost rings have to be sized such that they sit close to the rear hub and also such that they clear the seat and chain stays
placed too far away from the rear sprocket I find they tend to pop out of the chains grasp
eccentric bottom bracket is likely the best choice
messing with the rear axle is going to cause problems I can be sure of it
given the 120 mm over lock nut distance of modern track bike hubs there is some room inboard of the 130 mm road bike drop out width
from there you just need a cut off saw, drill and tap, and an unusually long axle

i think an eccentric bottom bracket is the least dodgy modification, and i reckon I can use a hollow steel shaft and reduce the bearing diameters to make a less ugly one than the first components product

i have a reasonably simple idea that involves minimal lug material removal. If i had one of the larger diameter modern aluminium bottom brackets this would be a harder decision. But the EBB's that fit in the british BB's look like fucking ass and that's pushed me over the line

something like a 19 mm BMX spindle might work in the right width
the first components P237SA looks to be made for a spindle of 24 mm OD

it looks like the press fit type of eccentric bottom bracket has the advantage of both sides being bolted together
for a split design like the first components P237SA maybe linking the two half's together via the mounting point for the derailleur cable guide
anyway its something to occupy the mind for a while, so I wish you luck on however things go

yeah all your sentiments im totally on the same page - if you look at designs on the market for press fit EBB's they incorporate this kindof stuff - for example there are two part ones that have spacers which pin into timed holes to keep them aligned.

the more i think about it the more i just cannot except the ugly appearance and q factor widening of the british compatible ones.

There certainly is the possibility of coming up with a better solution using smaller bearings and working tightly within the space available. But when i think about doing it myself the concern is that things like bearing preload and axial alignment are very important and lend themselves to mass production - i.e. i can buy a non eccentric, normal BB for chump change but they are incredibly well built and durable and to try and match that myself would require a lot of care and effort.

the idea i just posted for modifying the dropouts is something achievable with a hacksaw and file, even more achievable with a small cnc, and wouldn't give me the opportunity to compromise some important bearing alignment, preload, etc.

i only need ~3mm total adjustment since a half link is 6.35
the timed m3 screw is something i will likely do tho just to hold them in place

yeah, i'll pick up on as many surfaces of the dropout geometry as i can. If you grip around the extremities with the washer it could even increase the strength.

I dont think its something you should do with an angle grinder and a mig in a hurry, but its totally achievable, albiet awkward, to sort something out that makes minimal changes to the underlying frame.

yea for sure heat build up around the metal to carbon fiber glued surface would mess things up
my CFR2 has some paint bubbles around its lugs so I'm spooked lmao
apparently water or oxygen getting into the bonds is what kills them, so the paint work has to be top notch

to my understanding, borne from boats and hobby aircraft, is that carbon + aluminium has quite an electrolytic action. Think graphite electrodes in a battery. So oxygen and water can cause a lot of damage because they help permit that electrolytic action. This degrades the aluminium, swells the joints which can splinter the carbon (invisibly), stress fracture the glue, etc.

Its something that is not a problem for a while then suddenly is a huge problem - its a lifetime/longevity thing.

there's of course other problems but this is the one that sneaks up and is unforseen

yeah thanks for finding that

judging by the pics its coming with a threaded bottom bracket as well so that saves me sourcing another part (now that i've made my mind up on chain tensioning)
