Do Tesla really have a huge headstart over every other car maker? What if cars are networked across makes and the A.I. / self driving systems become shared, like an open source or industry standard model.

It makes more sense for car makers to compete on quality and additive luxury features, than A.I. / threat detection, since all road users benefit from everyone else elevated to a similar high safety standard.

Tesla's advantages are only really an advantage, where Tesla's share the road with dumb unassisted conventional cars.
