That river was a literal open sewer when this thing was built. Fully canalized and so ridden with sewage and worse things. that 'crossing the Wupper' became a nation-wide synonym of death to this day.

It's interesting for people interested in industrial architecture.
What else do you want to see in Wuppertal? It's a relatively young city that like many others was largely destroyed in the war.

Good thing it was built in 1901. The urban landscape of Wuppertal is defined by the Schwebebahn and industrial buildings along the Wupper.
There are other attractions in Wuppertal like the Zoo but the Schwebebahn doesn't obstruct that experience, it enhances it.
Chinese tourists coming to visit Engels' birth place are also not going to be bothered by it.

If it had been built in the last several decades, it would have massive, unpainted concrete pylons (replete with graffiti) and steel girders--totally soulless. The fact that it was built when the truss was the most economical way to span most gaps is what makes it ki/n/o

It also created the city. When it was built it was just the neighboring towns of Barmen and Elberfeld. It took until 1929 when they were actually united but having such a unique connection helped to form an identity.

It was a trial of a new method of transportation and it wasn't really successful, but the relative uniqueness makes it interesting for tourists and therefore for locals as well.
