Ain't no one going to fucking take a train from LA->vegas or LA->PHX. Hell the train station in phoenix closed down because flights were just that much quicker and easier to do. No I don't want to spend +4.5 hours on a fucking train to LA when a ~75 minute flight for <50 bucks gets me there.

Cali will fumble the ball here on budget, so unless the DoT wants to just come in full balls out mode and handle the situation with 0 shit shoved back to them there goes the budget.

Everything west of the Mississippi is just pants on head retarded. Unless there are 3-4 trains during the day, those stops are unfeasible. Hell most already are when you realize that even if they were to go ~120mph most stops are still at least 5 hours apart for your east<->west bound routes.

Aside from retiree's doing the Reno->Salt Lake City, or similar routes, is down right stupid. Besides greyhound operates those routes and is probably cheaper/same time tables

There's no HSR, it's all corridor service. When it says enhanced services that just means more frequent trains so that they're proper corridor services with 4-10 trains a day rather than just a daily round trip.

A few big projects will make it through, some states will buy up a little bit of track, and that'll be it.

I don't understand the point of trains in the west coast. You'd need to completely overhaul how our cities are built. Sure I could take a train to Phoenix or LA or wherever, but what am I gonna do when I get there without a car? Everything is so spread out and public transit is very limited.

I've loved living in cities that are built more effectively for walking and transit, but I don't see a way to achieve that in a spread out car designed city.

Is there a way? I want to believe.

Not every state's capital is its largest city. They're important, but not important enough to serve every one. For example, serving Atlanta (Georgia's capital and largest city) makes sense, but routing a line to Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, is retarded when you can run it to that state's largest and most important city, Birmingham, instead. Same with Illinois, why would you route anything through Springfield (unless it was on the way) instead of Chicago?

Also consider California--SF, LA, and San Diego are way higher connection priorities than Sacramento is, although Sac isn't that far from SF so a case could be made for connecting it eventually.

Several hours between cities by car. High winds, snow, ice, etc. Roads closed for hours or days. Passenger trains running several times a day in both directions. Would ensure people can still get around, and have alternate transportation to airports.

Upper midwesterners are hardy people and none of them are strangers to cold weather. They know how to live with and handle the snow. There is no reason to connect a city of 10,000 people to another city 8 hours away by train (or whatever) that has 40,000 people. That money would be better used elsewhere.

If your state doesn't have Amtrak trains it just means that your state government doesn't want to pay for it. If people in a state vote in reps that don't want to spend on trains, then that state simply won't have trains

I actually think this is totally reasonable as a states' rights issue. Lots of places don't want those projects and the dollars that come with them because, as with Medicade expansion, states don't want to be on the hook for legacy costs. The federal dollars can and do run out, and the states (and thus, their taxpayers) will be on the hook for those projects when it happens.

It's not even worth talking about a lot of the fantasy maps that a lot of people are throwing out there (like >>1632529). Almost all of the new routes on the fantasy map are relatively short hub and spoke projects, which is very reasonable. It'd be nice to have unlimited funds and to connect places like Louisville and Cincinnati (a route once served by the Hummingbird), but in practice, this sort of line would not have great enough ridership to be worthwhile--and that's why they both go to Chicago instead of connecting to each other.

I think they should just build tracks from El Paso to Albuquerque and from Flagstaff to Vegas. That way it'll be easier to get there. I unironically lived in Atlanta too, and I fucking hated Hartsfield. I lived near East Atlanta Village/Decatur and it would take me like 30 minutes to get to the airport no matter the day or time. In Europe there's many cases where you can take the plane which is faster and cheaper, and people still take the train because of what the other anon said. The fact that the route is full property of one railway operator makes it even more exiting and for Wyoming there are points to branch of the line.
Flexible moving blocks or running at double the speed of freight could make scheduling along the route easy.

Amtrak generally runs shit-tier 76mph service shared with freight lines and outdated equipment. Actual HSR will necessarily cost more to build, both in terms of track improvements and and trainset costs. You’re just ignoring reality when you refuse to acknowledge that something good can be built with more money.

If you think there is some structural problem with Amtrak that would prevent them from ever building a useful rail system even with unlimited cash, then please make that argument. As it stands you’re resting on the logic of a child.

As long as they don't own most of their own track, much of money Amtrak would hypothetically receive would be lost or wasted in the bureaucracy and grift that comes with any government department.

And it usually works, because your average Joe is going to simply hear money going to schools and doesn't see the problem. The problem is that they aren't actually underfunded, and public schools often have expenses per kid that are multiple times that of very successful private/parochial schools.
Throwing money at problems does not necessarily mean the problems will be solved. If anything it incentivizes corruption as there's a giant pool of ever increasing money to be abused.

Schools are a lot more complex than trains; some schools will never succeed because of the people who are inside of them and the families they come from having no interest in a lifestyle that is conducive to academic success. This includes students who get no sleep, have terrible diets, no role models, teachers who are too comfortable/not good enough or unable to control the future criminals in their classroom, etc. None of this can be said for trains. Provided there is demand for a particular route, the train that runs that route can absolutely be improved with more money.

Your argument is like saying that a rusted out Ford Pinto driving on an unpaved road full of potholes cannot be improved upon regardless of how much money is available to fix the situation. Money means a paved road and a Ferrari, and the problem is fixed. Same with trains, but we never pave the road or buy the Ferrari, we just cover the pothole and bondo the rust on the Pinto.

To me the main issue with AMTRAK is its insistence on being for long-distance travel when that's really not practical, people only travel long distance a couple times a year. I think they should focus more on going town-to-town aiming to serve people just commuting an hour or so by car. As such I think the best case would be to create a series of systems to serve the main economic hubs locally with a couple connections between the main systems in case you really do want to ride the train cross country. This way there's a reason for people to ride trains at least almost daily. This is why the DC to Boston corridor is the only really lucrative lines, because people really do travel from suburban satellite towns to other towns and cities regularly. This map probably isn't perfect but these tend to be the main economically tied groups in the US. With small services around the Anchorage Alaska area and maybe in O'ahu island Hawaii.

Regarding Chicagoland (I'm >>1638884), what we have here is pretty robust. Even if nobody uses a route, the bus isn't cancelled. We have routes for pretty much any busy street that is an hour's drive from downtown. Local commuter rail for long distances, CTA "L" for medium-long distances in the city, buses for short-medium distances inside and out.

Amtrak doesn't service Rockford yet. It used to, but probably was discontinued because nobody really wants to go there. Buses have been supplanting demand at prices fairly comparable to what Amtrak will charge (probably $15, which isn't bad since it takes about two hours to get there from the city). Illinois will be funding it, and this is the case for most intrastate Amtrak routes.

Amtrak already runs trains through those corridors though, they're just shitty and slow because they use the same rails as the freight trains and get stuck behind them all the time. A fast link between DC and Chicago would be totally acceptable too, it's just absurd that there's no way to get from Amtrak's most popular train to Amtrak's most important rail hub in less than 20 hours.

I just flew from NYC to the Deep South yesterday and it took all day. Had to transfer to Chicago and the flight from NYC to Chicago is 3 hours in the air, not to mention the trip to LaGuardia which is quite long, then going through security.
Then when the plane lands EVERYONE is looking at your to hurry up and get your shit and go, it’s just an annoying experience.

The counterpoint to the “planes aren’t that much faster” thing is the countless times I’ve been on an Amtrak train and we’ve had to stop and wait for some freight train to go by for over an hour, or sometimes something snow or weather related. Really fucks up your plans when it happens.
