Benefit is, if existent, probably negligible, but I don't see a reason why trying it out would pose any drawbacks.

Gains would be marginal, especially in MTB where your speed does not come from pedalling. But if it is time to change a chain ring you might as well try one. Just make sure it oval is in the right place.

Not for "eliminating dead zones", because it allows you to have more leverage in the stroke for less material, so you put down more torque, torque allows you to accelerate quickre after irregularities on the path, while ridig on the road, you want to keep a smooth circular pedaling motion. So the oval there doesn't help much.

I put an oval 42t chainring on my road bike after the 1x conversion for the sake of trying it.
Pedalling does feel very smooth but to feel a difference I'd have to compare it to the same bike with a rounnd chain ring side by side.
The narrow wide teeth propably also add to the quietness.

From a biomechanical standpoint oval chainrings do make a lot of sense and if it's just taking the knee strain out a little.
I would not recommend it for a 2x setup because you're guaranteed to have shifting issues.

How would it do that though? The chain tension doesn't change throughout the pedal stroke any more than a round chainring. See https://youtu.be/IQVSMAz0bTo
