Surly peaked years ago, they have been basically trading off the back of a reputation built by people who are no longer with the company. There was a time they were doing quite interesting things, good quality frames with some really nice features, but the mainstream players have pretty much steamrollered right over their little niche (pun intended), and with no realy new or interesting ideas coming out from them they just look like what they are, yesterdays news.
Don't get me wrong though, their bikes are good, their frames are well made, if you can get a used Surly for a reasonable price then you can be pleased with that, but you can now get so much more for the money they're charging.
