When do you ever need to replace your bike tires? As long they don't have holes they'll be fine right?

My bike is on its 7th set after almost 29 years, so I'm getting about 4 years usage per set. I will add the caveat that in the 90's I did a lot of downhill trail riding, proper rocky and steep inclines, so I ate through 3 sets between 1992 and 2002, since then i have used the bike mainly for commuting, a bit of urban exploration with a little light trail riding and seem to get much more mileage out of them.

this is when you MUST replace the tire

PREFERABLY you replace that tire

you should PROBABLY replace the tire, it'll wear funny and fail on you

My Schwalbe One's on my roadbike are finally done. I can see the insides through the outer rubber layer. They lasted for like 5 years

When you wear through the tread it is time to replace. Also, when they begin to square off it is time to replace. I will typically go through one set per year.

Some tyres have wear indicators on them. Those little dimples on conti tyres that look like defects for example - when those are gone the tyre "needs replacing"...

sidewall punctures are not an issue if you run tubes, a fiberglass patch does the job
flat spots on the back can usually be remedied by rotating tires, front wears slower and more evenly
cord showing means tire is indeed toast

They're nice and all (and relatively cheap), just ignore all the shills claiming that they have any flat protection whatsoever and make sure you always carry a spare tube and maybe a tire boot.

Most often they just wear down the middle until holes or threads start appearing. Sometimes the sidewall disintegrates. I've heard of wire tearing out of rubber.

Just a 91 Yeti, it's not a downhill bike, just a standard 90's mtb. I live in the Peak district so it's all downhill riding and uphill pushing lol.
