it's just as painful if you still have the main lines, but all smaller ones were cut and the akwardness of transfering at least three times with no guranteed connections and one of those might be a bus prevents you from wanting to go places

it's essentially how it goes in small towns, a shitty line that barely works and goes 40km/h max speed surprisingly doesn't get a ton of riders, they shut down, lines fall into ruin, cost is deemed too high to fix (despite other insanely expensive projects going on), truly sad.

The town im from was famous for the granite that came out of it; those rail lines out of town died in the 1920's and got turned into bike paths. The towns next to me had old mills associated with their rail lines. They still exist as small rail line companies connecting each other to eventual main cities still as rail and possibly as future commuter lines.

But the whole "lets connect too commuter lines ", is really just talk even after every renewed interest every 10 years.

I live in a town with a big grand central station right downtown that now only gets passenger trains around twice a week. Our old streetcar system was also completely demolished and they refuse to build a light rail netweork. The only sign left that this place used to be a huge train city are the massive freight yards dotting the city.

You can still see where they go and a bit of em still exist for industrial reasons but don't go as far as they use to anymore as the point's past the usability for industry were removed and turned back into farmland or bike paths.

One that's haunted me most of my life went from downtown to the neighboring city then a lake as well a sawmill spur off it,Funny there's still some old footage of it near the lake but nothing near downtown or before it turned north.

City also use to have a trolley system that was removed due to the bus fiasco.
City put it on ballet a few years ago to bring it back from downtown to a district in town,but nothing ever came of it also downtown is kind of dead and the idiots don't know how to fix it properly as nobody goes there anymore really and keep investing in dumb shit nobody wants.

I live in the same town as where that picture was taken. The line is a shell of its former self. :^(

Today I walked a section of track starting 3 blocks north of the station. They could easily bring back passenger service again. The track is in better shape than when it was running.

I live in Oklahoma City. This city is mostly suburban sprawl but the downtown area is riddled with former streetcar and train infrastructure. OKC could also really benefit from a more well-developed public transportation system because of its size. To add insult to injury the city recently completed a costly streetcar project but it is not practical at all. It’s mostly just a toy for rich people because the new street car just runs through the expensive downtown shopping and restaurant areas without actually being near many residential areas. If you wanted to ride the new street car you would likely have to drive downtown, find a place to park, and then get on the street car. I see very few people actually riding it as well. In my opinion it’s kind of a joke.

Fuck. Used cars are fetching rediculous prices. Rental agencies are going to the used car lots and buying them up at premium prices. Combined with rising insurance costs and gas prices... yikes! I miss the freedom but holy shit i'm banking a bunch money right now by not having a car. :-/
