Not endorsing this, but genuinely curious. It seems like breaking into a bike shop at night with a van could net you a pretty hefty profit.
Do bicycle cat burgularys ever happen? If you had a truck you could easily steal 100k or so of new bikes. It would hard to get rid of them but I’m surprised this hasn’t been attempted more to my knowledge

I buy components from a mate who works in a bike shop, depending on what it is I pay between 25 and 40% of the retail price, some stuff like chains and shit he can fit in his pockets he gets me for free lol, last summer he pulled out 5 complete 1x11 GRX groupsets, I bought 3 for £750, sold one for £650, used one and kept one for spares.

Fuck capitalism man.

I live about a mile from the bike shop next to the precinct station that got trashed in Mpls last year, I was picking bikes out of my yard for weeks afterwards.

All the bike shops I've worked in have had barred windows and extra-secure doors for exactly that reason. The most recent one I worked at our closing routine included locking all the doors, putting a custom made bar and chain setup behind the most vulnerable, AND double checking the roof access lock as somebody actually broke in through the roof in the past and then unlocked doors from the inside to steal bikes. Not in a high crime city/area either...

Seems like a bad idea unless you're shipping those bikes out of country. Rather, high risk and low reward. Those frames still have serial numbers. You can sell the other parts but that'll be effort. Depending where you live, this could put you in prison for over a decade. Probably don't want to be that guy that's in prison for stealing bikes.

yeah and i've heard in third world countries they only pay a tiny fraction of msrp for stolen bikes. if you can find the right niche you can surely turn a profit, like drive a tractor out of the country with a gps jammer, or take catalytic converters out of cars (supposedly only takes a few minutes and worth hundreds of dollars each) but the risk of getting caught is always there. you could take advantage of amazon's return policy without repercussions, even if you do it for thousands of dollars with no plausible deniability they might just ban your account and not get you in trouble with the law. you could buy shares in gamestop and make money off of the short squeeze completely legally. you could involve yourself with shitty companies that rip off investors and have them give you a high paying job. etc etc

a lot of police depts across the US have simply stopped giving a shit about catalytic converter theft, to the point where they know who is doing it and who is raking in the bux, but they don't do anything because they don't have the manpower or the ability to convict. it only takes a couple of minutes to pop a cat off with a saw. dudes who do this shit can make hundreds or even thousands a day, especially if they score a few priuses. those dudes aren't going to be especially hot on the gme short squeeze tho who knows, maybe they plow some of their gains into stonks instead of heroin, meth, and crack
