Are they a meme? Does anyone on /n/ have one? Are they a toy/fun or are they actually viable as a compact mode of transport?

I only ever hear great things about them, and they seem incredibly fun and exciting but what does /n/ think? I might spend my coronavirus gibbs on a nice board.

skateboards have some of the worst handling out of all wheeled transportation methods, manual skates are saved by their slowness matching their poor grip, stability and tolerance for bad roads, but eletric ones are way too fast to be safe
plus it's already hard to ollie a longboard, let alone one that weighs like a bicycle, a board that can't be ollied loses the last shred of practicality it could've had
leave skateboards for the halfpipes and longboards for downhill bombing, the only skate that kinda-sorta makes sense for transportation is a penny for that last mile boost, for everything else they are severely outclassed in every way
get a scooter, it's faster, safer and more practical, electric or not
or go big and get a nice bicycle with zero electrical gubbins

rather carry a small electric skateboard or wheel one of them around a shop than an electric scooter which are way bigger than you expect (as are higher end skateboards i guess)

Monowheels are extremely dangerous and require constant attention. You stand on a board and it goes straight, you sit on a bicycle and it goes straight, you stand on a monowheel and it tries to go haywire, you have to be tense at all times to ride it because it can fall in literally any direction and not just left-right.
Wheeling them around by the handle is a nice thng though. I'm actually surprised there isn't a single FWD scooter with a mode that balances it on the front wheel when folded, monowheel-style. Would make them functionally much more compact and easy to transport.
Electric skateboards aren't small, nor light.

Just untrue there are plenty of small little eboards that weigh under 10kgs
its only the max power hobbyist ones that weight tonnes
anything under 10kgs that can be held in one hand is portable to me

They are best thing invented since sliced bread. Unmatched combination of performance, portability and fun.

Dunno about onewheel, but unicycles are super easy to ride. Difficult to learn, yes, but riding is easy peasy. In both qualities they are very similar to bicycles.

Such small boards have childish battery. Something like 150 watt hours or something. Real range for e - things is 20 Watt hours per km. So we are talking about 7-8 kms range and inability to climb any hill. Real fun with electric things start at about 1000 watt hour batteries.

i honestly really want a unicycle but i dont think i can afford any of the higher end models and the lower end ones seem less capable than similarly priced boards
also cause im going to be just simply breaking the law by using anything in my country (at least until the legalise them because literally everyone is on boards and scooters in the cities) a board or scooter seems more low key and less likely to get me fined

Cheap monowheels are absolutely more capable than any boards, but they are also deathtraps because almost all of them have the motor cut out without warning when it's overloaded. Which means if you accidentally exceed top speed or try to scale a big hill you might just faceplant. Or you start braking a bit too hard and it suddenly stops braking. More reputable wheels leave some performance to spare specifically for those situations, they will take that emergency power to keep you balanced while screaming at you that you should hold your horses. If you get a second hand one that claims to have unlocked performance- that's just that safety limiter removed, don't go too hard on it, or better put the limiter back on because it's hard to gauge speed on the wheel.
Scooters are generally more noticable because they have handlebars. Wheel and board both hide under your feet and are invisible at a glance, you are just a pedestrian moving fast. You really should gear up on the wheel though, at least a helmet and wrist braces, so that's a minus to stealth.

Just get a bicycle. Don't chase trends, good old safety bicycle is still the best piece of transportation not restricted to car roads. Get one with a little motor if you are a lazy ass, will cost the same as a board while having unmatched performance and versatility.

Yeah unicycles are relatively expensive.
300 watt hour models is absolute minimum to ride and they clock $500. And they are really training wheels on budget, you will outgrow them fast.
Minimum wheels that can bring satisfaction to experienced riders are MCM5 800 wh, V10F or Tesla V3. They are $1200-1600. If you can't eventually cant afford that you better shouldn't try.

It's always my issue getting into new things, I go too hard on something I don't use or not hard enough on something I get obsessed with

I learned on V5f. It never cut out. It always warned me with tilt back about overload so I had time to back off and stop pushing. I rode carefully though without abrupt accelerations. Sure you can overload such wheel with hard leaning so fast you would have not time to recognize tilt back and back down your push. But just don't do such leans and you will be fine.

I average 17mph on bumpy, uneven sidewalk and hit and sustain 25mph+ on smooth asphalt no problem. If you have no experience skating then it is actually the most dangerous, but if you have experience and know how to position yourself and transfer weight across the board then honestly it's the most fun, more fun than my high end scooter even.

Having to push is the worse part of a skateboard. I've fucked up my ankle pushing too hard, once you get rid of the having to push constantly, skating becomes 10x more enjoyable.

I used to get around on bicycle, but it was too big to store it at the apartment and also I had to pay extra for it when riding on train. So I have decided to build an electric skateboards. I had skill for it, but I was probably influenced by Casey Neistat as well.
To keep it short, it's fun hobby, but those things are not useful for transportation. Either it has small range or it's too heavy. Ride is uncomfortable with small wheels, even with the more premium ones. Wheels can actually get stuck in potholes (I had several accidents like this). It can't take corners well. I also need to carry it everywhere. You can't load your backpack too heavy with groceries or you will lose balance.
I also got Ninebot Max scooter and that thing is far better for commuting. Ride is more comfortable, more stable, I can circle around cars, I can lock it in bike rack. Only downsides are probably less fun to ride and slow speed 30km/h.
I still ride esk8s as a hobby, but for practical stuff I use scooter.

Are those useful? Folding bikes seem to be too much hassle to fold/unfold and riding experience doesn't look to be the best with the small fragile frame. Besides that I got used to faster speeds, I don't think I could cycle faster than 30km/h for a longer period of time without getting all sweaty.

Buy second hand. It's cheap, usually sold for 60% of the original price. You won't be afraid to get scratches on it. Once you outgrow it after several months, you can sell it for the same price or maybe just a little lower.

Yeah, those small esk8s have the range that you could just walk anyway. When I'm riding for fun, I want it to last. Also with bigger battery you can charge it faster.

My Meepo Mini gets a range of 20-25 miles while able to reach 27mph on flat. Not only that but is as maneuverable as any board say if you know how to carve and pump. On roads I am able to keep up with cars in corners, no problem. I've only been thrown twice in 500 miles of riding. One was uneven sidewalk that I failed to notice in time, the other was bad footing coming down from a hump that I use to hop over. For $600 it's the most Kino choice.
