Hey /n/ i ordered this bike tool kit from amazon like 3 months ago and it has yet to arrive.

Can someone recommend me a good kit that will have everything I need and can actually purchase in Canada?

I looked at getting all the tools individually, but it was too involved so I'd prefer just a simple kit that will have most of what I'll need.

What do you normally have to fix? It would help if you described your bike(s). Personally, my kit accrued over time based on what I needed to fix. A lot of the stuff in that image you probably won't need. I'd say at least:

>Tire levers
>Floor pump

It's a trek 4500 mountain bike. Its years old and I was planning on stripping it down, cleaning/lubing/repairing anything that needs it and putting it back together good as new. I was hoping to learn about all the parts etc in the process.

I have basic wrenches etc but there are tons of other small things that I'll need to do this. Putting a list of then together and ordering them individually is too expensive and time consuming so I just want a kit like this with the basics that I can supplement as needed.

the only things in that picture you 'need' are allen keys (for everything)
a chain tool, cassette tool, and chain whip, to change chains and cassettes.
a Cable cutter to change cables
And tyre levers to change tires.
And a track pump (not included)

I really don't think you want to get chinked on cheap allen keys as the heads wear and then the worn heads damage fasteners, so even if you bought a complete bike tool kit, i'd still recommend atleast getting some quality (wera or something) 4/5/6mm keys, preferably just a set.

Whether you actually want a freewheel tool, a headset spanner, cone spanners, and any number of other things you might get in a kit depends on what bikes you want to work on. If they're modern, odds on you won't be using any of the aforementioned things. And if you are working on old or esoteric bicycles you'll find yourself wanting a bunch of meme tools that aren't included in any kit.

And things like 15mm pedal spanners or screwdrivers would really best be bought as just a decent spanner set or screwdriver set, not bike specific

In reality 13, 14 and 15 are the only sizes you will ever need. Probably just 13 and 15.
and you'll probably want 2 13s and 15s.

And a regular spanner set.

Square taper crank pullers if you're servicing older bikes, possibly an old style bottom bracket lockring wrench (I had to buy one for my second to last teardown, for all the others screwdriver + hammer worked well enough). Shimano cartridge square taper bottom bracket wrench adapter if you're replacing with cartridge square taper. If you're going to put in hollow tech or GXP style BBs then one of those wrenches
A big ass bolt and nut and washers for the sheldon style fixed cup remover and a deep socket to fit one side of it, again for bottom bracket service
Definitely a freewheel tool as previously mentioned
Chain breaker as in your photo
Good quality multi sized spoke wrench but you can wait until you actually need to true a wheel or replace spokes to get one
Chain cleaner like in your photo is a meme but a convenient one, but not absolutely necessary. Get some degreaser though that is not a meme at all. I use Zep citrus degreaser by the gallon but it seems less concentrated than the bike specific degreaser I last used (forgot the brand, it's also cheaper but I end up using more, it may have evened out, may not).
Definitely a cable cutter as in your photo but get a good quality one, side cutters and flat profile shears do not work well at all they just fray out cables.
Nashbar used to sell a good kit for not too much $$ before they went under and became resurrected but soulless.

You often want to hold the axle firmly on one side with one wrench and then adjust the opposite cone. If you hold the locknut, it will unscrew. The opposite cone however will be unscrewing against the locknut and will stay firm/tighten itself.

You could get around it but it can often be the best way to adjust or loosen something.

And practically all cones are 13 or 15mm. I've encountered 14 too. 19mm cones. Wtf is that?

I get it now, thanks. Good to know about the cones everything I was reading was saying to get like 10 different sizes and I thought that seemed unnecessary.

By the way I used simple green for degreaser and it works great. Really cheap too. I even clean my nasty weed pipes and bathtub with it.

Thats exactly my plan. I want to take everything apart, figure out how it works, clean/lube/repair it and put it back together. If I do one tool at a time I'll be waiting days or weeks in between. I'd rather have a somewhat comprehensive toolkit to start.

wd40 for cleaning/lubing stuff
grease for lubing stuff (bike specific or wheel bearing grease), use this a lot, like on almost every thread or mated surface, seatposts, quill stems, etc.
rags (rip up t-shirts)
toothbrush (wash it thoroughly before you use to clean your teeth again)

i don't understand how someone waits 3 months for a package to arrive, but then suddenly and urgently needs a bunch of tools to refurbish their bike for educational purposes

just start taking things apart one by one, and when you get to something you can't remove, then order the tool

Buy a decent set of Allen keys. That tool kit you purchased is actually pretty useful for covering all the bases, but a good Allen key will avoid rounding out a bolt.

You are getting on a rather fun hobby, as long as nothing is broken it is quite relaxing to fiddle on bikes.
But just like the anons said, go slow and find the things you need before buying, it helps to see park tool various videos on bike repair, there you can identify what type of gear you have and what tools you will need to fix/fiddle with them.

Also, don't cheap out on tools, you don't need high en shit but buy quality tools, cheap shit strips everything away and ruins your bike tool, maybe you won't have to worry about that since you are in Canada, I said it because I'm on Brazil and unless you spend serious money you get very shitty tools that really can't be used.

Pic related is a great for any repairs or adjustments you may need to do while riding. Also contains a fair number of tools you'd require for maintenance as well, though you'll need to pair it with a decent spanner and socket wrench.
