>bike chain snaps during trek
>walk 20 km home
>chain is stiff as fuck it's got years of dirt and grease
>clean chain with vinegar / baking soda / soap for hours
>it's nice and clean
>too short, so add more links / pivots
>clean rear derailleur parts too
>put bike together
>gear skip like crazy
>middle of another long trek chain snaps again
>next day go buy a new chain
>install new chain
>index gears, front and back
>go test it and shift gears
>gear wire snaps
>go buy new ones
>change both wires front and back
>have to index stuff again
>3 days of 4-5 hours of working on this
>indexing and gears work flawlessly while on stand
>even fixed brakes and cleaned off dirt and gear and everything is in tip top
>finally time to test it
>it runs amazing
>until I hit middle back gears
>skips like mad
>can't put any kind of weight on it

What did I do wrong? Pic related, it's my shit bike.

I think what I did wrong was cleaning the back shimano plastic parts too much and added too little grease. Going to try fixing that next.

you waited until your chain and cables reached their expiration date
you installed a new chain on a worn cassette
it's the consequence of the "dude just ride ur bike into the ground then buy another lmao" philosophy

I looked at the gears. They are fine. No chip or damage. The bike has been kept in dry and warm indoors but has been ridden through the winter. It has never failed me, until I changed the chain. It's measured correctly too. However the old chain became insanely weak after I cleaned it, meaning the grit and grim was probably what kept it in place lol.

Hmm. I don't know what part that is. You're right though. I didn't. It was a cheap 20€ bike I bought one summer to just ride on and then I had to fix it left and right. I would say I did maintain it to my best of knowledge. I would not spend insane amounts fixing it though since the initial investment was low too. I mean the locks and chains costed more than the bike itself. I still don't want to give up on it weirdly enough.

I agree with the consequence you said just then. However I want to become better at fixing and maintaining bikes, hence why I've spent a good year teaching myself on how to do it. I recently invested big money on a road bike and I don't want to ride that into oblivion.

This bike has seen thousands of kilometres this year alone already in the winter conditions. It's spring now and I want it to see some more kilometres before I throw it away.

The gears don't have to be actually broken for the chain to skip, just worn. They get worn by using a chain too long.

You need new chainrings and cassette also. They're worn and your new chain doesn't fit them properly anymore. The old chain had worn with them so it didn't skip. This is why you change your chains before this happens.

that only means they're not damaged, not that they're not worn. look closer, I assure you the middle cogs' teeth will be "sharper" while the others are more "square". that's because you use the middle cogs more, and that's why your new chain skips on them, it can't engage properly.
there are ways to measure chain wear, so that you can replace it when it's worn out but no so worn out that your cassette also needs replacing.
no need to go crazy with maintenance either, just wipe down and relube every two weeks or so, depending on how much you ride.
also, the drivetrain is all the bits that move (crankset, cassette, derailleurs, chain)
if you want to keep riding that bike, you'll have to replace the cassette. hell, the way you talk about it, the chainrings are probably worn out too.

That could be it then. I just did more maintenance on it and the chain still clicks on the lowest rear gear every now and then even on the stand, so I assume under load it will still keep skipping. I can't figure out what it is, but after bending the rear derailleur slightly it seemed to have eased a bit.
