What is the best way to straighten a rim?
I own a 50s era Schwinn Tornado and the wheel is bent subtly that it keeps hitting the chainstay.

Depends on the bend, if the rim itself is warped sometimes you have to bang/bend it back into shape more or less, otherwise you can't true it back into shape with the spoke nipples without the tension being seriously uneven.

I like to use the ziptie method to true wheels, if you don't have bike repair stand then just flip the bike upside down to spin the wheel. You can get a spoke wrench that has multiple sizes for like $5 on amazon
