Bike routes in big cities (for training,not commuting)

How do you deal with having not many routes to choose if you live in a big city,expecially near the center?
I have just 2/3 road biking routes have some scenery and are fun to bike and 1 park near my house,that i know 100% by memory.
Pic is on of the road bike routes i ride on usually

by riding out of the city, of course. every long ride I go on includes ~20km of leaving the urban density behind
I'm sure there's some nice mountains or lakes near your city anon, just gotta do the effort of getting there

OP here,yes i live in Rome,and we have a beautifule ''bike highway'' that follows the river Tiber (and is the road i follow for road bike training) and some smaller bike paths that are good for commuting,and we also have some beautiful parks that are good for some light mountain biking. Too bad we still have a strong anti-bike culture,we had to fight for some of our bike paths

unironically have you tried getting on the train? of course you cant do it if you want a quick ride but if you are going for a sunday morning ride or something the trains will probably be cheap and empty but idk what its like in rome
its not uncommon to do this in london
you can also get the train out and ride back and vice versa

Look for linear parks
London has river beck that you can follow for mostly traffic free cycling for about 10 miles

It's just 25km to the mountains from the center of Rome. It's not optimal but not that bad either, and after 10km you're out of the city already so it becomes more enjoyable. I ride 15km each way on my MTB to get to the mountain and it's not a big deal, just have to account for a longer trip.
Worst case you can go to Tivoli by train and ride from there but it's not really saving any time, just good for saving energy so you can ride longer in the nicer area.

Ride twice during the week on one of the nice route you have in the city and take a longer trip to the mountain on the weekend.

This is assuming you'd like to ride in the mountains obviously, if you're happy with flat roads it's even easier just go 10km in any direction and you're out of the city,
