I am overhauling an old bike, it's a mountain bike with a 1'' threaded head tube.
I'm confused about the bearings, I'm used to either loose bearings or sealed ones but these are sort of half and half, you can see the ball bearings but they are held in place by a kind of ring clasp device, also there is no top lock nut, instead there is a threaded plastic racer with a metal clasp that fixes everything in place, something else I have never seen before.

Questions
>Which way do these bearing orient? They are from the bottom fork end of the headset assembly and fell out when I removed the forks before I could see how they were seated.

>Is that top fastener going to be enough? I never saw one without a lock nut before, it does seem to work but it kind of means I have no real control over the tightness of the bearings, maybe this is how they used to do it back in 1990.

those are called caged bearings, the bottom flat part goes against the crown race, and the top part (where the actual bearing protrudes) goes against headtube race, so that the bearings are in contact with it
that being said, bearing cages are pretty shitty and easy to warp, you can just get rid of them and add an extra couple bearings, if you're comfortable working with loose balls. it'll make for a stronger and smoother headset
never seen that sort of headset though

Thanks anon, I was considering switching to loose bearings, might as well consider a new headset while I'm at it, really not sure about that top fastening, even when it's very tightly attached it's possible to move the the wheel out of alignment with the bars, it takes considerable force to do it, and I know they say handlebars should be able to move under force, but it just doesn't inspire confidence.

To check the headset size do I measure the diameter of the top of the threaded fork tube?

The bearing retainer in the lower assembly uses fifteen 1/4" bearings. The oversized lower bearings can accommodate more abuse and should produce longer wear. The lower assembly is surrounded by a molded, yet removable rubber "bearing boot". In the early days of mountain biking, dirt contamination in the headset was common. Adequate seals didn't exist yet.

That's a rare piece of MTB history you have there, only seen on early high end Kona's, clean it up, replace the bearings if necessary and enjoy.

Cleaned the bearings up, bottom bearings seem fine, but the 4 balls are loose from the top cage, I replaced them here but they fall out.

I'm guessing that with the help of grease and with the support of the races they should stay in place, but if I were to replace them what would be the best way to approach it? Same size balls but more of them?

You can pull the clear part off from the outside. Just put your thumb near the bottom and start bending to the side until it pops off.

The inner plastic part with the valve can be pulled out of the silicone part. I use a tooth pick to clean out the recessed parts of it.

so a guy near me is selling old bike frames and parts because he's shutting down his old shop. How retarded, as a guy who has been maintaining a beat up old CCM I got for twenty bucks, would it be to just get one of the frames, put the crap hardware from the CCM on it and slowly upgrade the parts? He's got an old Kona and a Specialized frame, as well as a couple that I couldn't read or recognize.

In the absence of details we can't really say for certain, and odds are that not everything on your CCM will go onto a different frame without any incompatibilities, but if you have the space and time for such projects, why not? It will be a learning experience for you in any case.

There is a link to a frame size guide there but it's for road and mountain bikes, not hybrids. That said I think large is the correct size for you. If you really want to be sure, Cannondale probably has a size chart on their website. Check the Bad Boy's webpage for a size chart.
A lot more than just frame size matters. Saddle height and angle, bar position, bar angle. Even the grips on your bars could make a difference (it might seem irrelevant to neck pain but it's not necessarily true, your body parts are interconnected and hand/wrist/arm position can affect back and neck) so you could replace the grips with ergonomic grips.

If you want advice on fit then you have to post a pic of your bike with you on it, propped up against a wall or something

your -form- also might be an issue

and i've had neck injuries in the past from bikes that are too small, with not enough reach. This can often cause you to not roll your shoulders forward and not arch your back, which will cause neck pain. A lot of people don't know to do that.

The other thing you might do is work on your core strength. That will help neck/back pain

Be aware that different wheels require different ideal tension settings, and even one wheel might have a different ideal tension for left side vs right side, so don't just assume that beause 20 is a good number for one wheel it's also a good number for another wheel

Cheers lads. From the info you've given the seat I think is too high. One of the design flaws of the bike is its relatively low bar design that creates a cool aggressive look but means I hunch forward to much. I'm going to try adjusting the position of the seat as well.

Saddle should be absolutely horiziontal.
With your Heel resting on the pedal in the 6 o'clock position your leg should be straight with light pressure being applied to the pedal.
With the correct pedaling part of your foot (ball of the foot) resting on the pedal in the 6 0'clock position your leg should be slightly bent, but only slightly.
When seated in normal riding position your handlebars should be concealing your front wheel hub from your direct line of sight, in other words perfect alignment from eyes, through bars to hub.
There should be no feeling of being stretched or otherwise forced into an uncomfortable position in order to achieve these things, adjustment of the seat forwards or back, seat post height, handlebar height and length and/or angle of the stem will make any bike within reason (kids bikes or XXL frames aren't ever going to fit a man of 5'10'') fit the rider comfortably.

Are cycling gloves actually good at dampening vibrations or are they just a meme? I thought for the longest time they're only used to prevent callouses - which idgaf about.

Cycling gloves are not for dampening vibrations. Any glove that has padded insers at the palm will go spongy and sloppy as soon as it get sweaty and will cause grip problems, slipping and pain due to having to constantly readjust, grip with force and slipping out of the comfortable positions.
A good glove is like the Giro DND, has no padding at the palm and gives a firm grip even when sweating.
To dampen vibrations you can use softer grips on your handlebar, or softer padded bartape or gel paddings under the bartape. You can also use a Redshift stem to give some active suspension and dampening.

I don't think they decrease vibrations, after all it's just a thin layer of leather/other material. Gloves are useful to increase the grip, avoid sweat on your hand/hood rubber and they can also be helpful when clearing sweat from your forehead or the random liquid snot.And in case you crash, gloves maybe can avoid your palms get fucked by road rash and debris.

I am not a bike fitter but what I have heard, including from a bike fitter I used to work with, is pretty much in line with what the anon you quoted said. Slightly bent knee when the pedal is in the lowest position (6 oclock). Depends what you mean by "full extension" but knee should never be locked at any point in the rotation, so if that's what you mean by "full extension" that's too high of a saddle.

In my personal opinion, don't even worry about using a tension meter if just trueing. Just go by feel. Others will disagree with me. As long as you have the tension meter, might as well use it, but make sure you're going for the right numbers. Whatever else you do, get something like this to thoroughly clean those bearings and the bearing races, don't use anything water-based, and use some decent quality sythnetic grease to re-pack them before putting it all back together. Also look at any seals to see if they need to be replaced, those bearings look like they got water and mud contaminating them which is why they look like that.

I have similar bottles. The caps are designed to be taken apart, although if they have 'heart valves' in them you'll have to get something long and skinny like a small screwdriver to pop them out. Then clean everything thoroughly.
The key to keeping these clean in the long term is to *rinse them out* right after your ride, then keep the caps off them as they sit. Take out the silicone rubber plug from the inside of the cap, rinse everything, drop the cap into the bottle, and stick the cap on top of the bottle opening at an angle so it's all exposed to the air.

How big of a loss would be going to a 1x7 from a 3x7? I have a 15 year old trek 820 and I just went though a bunch of shit with getting a working rear derailure, now the front one is acting fucky and I wouldn't mind removing some bulk. I'd say the easiest/cheapest thing to try would maybe be a better skewer with more bite. If you don't already have one, get one with an enclosed cam as they're usually easier to get tighter. Also make sure the nut on the opposite side is steel and not aluminum so it will bite better.

just remove your big and small chainring and fd and front shifter. Chain retention shouldn't be a big issue.

all you need is shorter chainring bolts. This btw, is the absolute last thing to buy chink tier. You'll have to break your chain to remove the fd. If you got KMC like we say then that's easy. You'll also want to possibly shorten your chain. And you'll probably have to remove a grip to get your shifter off.

post some pics once you've done it to reciprocate because i see this question fairly often and give helpful advice but rarely anyone does it or shows they did it

the limit screws not working is highly unlikely
you just haven't got your head around how they work
you should be able to visually see it. They are stops that the derailer rests on at either end of its travel.
It's a physical thing that you can see.

They're currently probably both all the way out, so if the derailer isn't inwards enough, you need to either space out your crank, angle the derailer in slightly, and see if that still gives acceptable shifting, or get a different derailer.
The cable is very slack meaning 2 things. The low limit is the only thing stopping the derailer moving further inboard. And the first pull of the shifter is probably just taking up the slack, which is why it's not shifting up.

you can completely dissasemble single and dual pivot caliper brakes, but especially the latter is filled with fragile bushings and tiny tiny bearings and little plastic pieces and washers that go in slightly different meme orders and many times I fucking end up with a shit tonne of play or binding at the end when i've cleaned and greased and re-assembled and it shoudl be working perfectly.

The first thing to do is just spray the shit out of it with crc/wd40 or something like that and that might loosen it all up. Maybe take your pads off before you do it to avoid impregnating them with oil, or cover them.

Guys, I got this frame from a chicken coop on my cousins home, it's been there for more than 10 years, I cleaned out the bearings and greased then, now both wheels spin nicely but the bottom bracket is making noises and is hard to spin.
Also the rear sprockets tilted the way to much to one side, it is way off center.
The fork is bent but I will try to straighten it out.

My question is, should I buy all the things needed to fix it?
I live on Brazil so:
Tyres and tubes would be aroun 150 minimum.
Breakes and cables woul be around 100, maybe a little more.
The rear derailleur works, and I have a front derraiuler
I have a chain ass well.
It would maybe go to 300 for changing the bottom bracket bearings.

Is it a good ideia?
Ir should I just buy a new one?
Should I made it a fixie? So i can skip the breakes? It is very hilly here I'm my town.

Anon,i live in Brazil too, you gotta keep this things on mind before taking any bike projects:
-Never mess with one piece crank frames (monobloco, a caixaria geralmente eh maior do que o normal)
-Never mess with a bad welded frame (this frame look like a SENAI junior made the welds)
-Never mess with plain simples 1020 steel frames (only if they're double butted like Sundown used to do with their Shimanimal and Raindrop frames)
-Stay away from generic brands like Houston, Monark, Prince,Ocean and such. Basically the only kind of national stuff you want is Caloi, Sundown, Alfameq and such, but only pre-2000's

as for the lock nut I would not worry too much about it, the normal threaded type comes loose quite often
one way to check for this is to flip the bike vertically so that it rests on its rear wheel, apply the rear brake and pull up and down on the handle bar

the upper crown race is adjustable up and down on the threaded section of the steering tube
with the normal set up its ok to run this slightly loose, as the lock nut adds extra loading to the bearing anyway
when fully tighten down there should be only just enough play so that the bearing can run smoothly
the difference between too tight and tight enough is very small

yours you just have to set the right load with the crown race, and from there tightening the clamp bolt should have no significant effect on the adjustment
normal stuff is to clean the ball bearings and visually inspect for dents or chips in the surface
some people also measure the bearing diameter to see if it needs replacing but for normal purposes this is over kill

Also thanks for the tips for checking the tightness of the headset, and in case you missed it the lack of a lock nut appears to be by design for this particular headset assembly. I have a micrometer so I did measure the ball bearings and have ordered new ones, the top ones being slightly smaller than those on the bottom, again a design feature of this particular headset design.

i've heard some sources say change your chain when it starts making noise, but personally, a chain is such a crucial part of your drivetrain that it doesn't make sense (to me at least) to cheap out on it, it's one of the simplest things to replace, and since you already own a chain elongation guage, i'm assuming you have some mechanical abilities

Yeah, the 820 is borderline too small since it was from when I was a kid 15 years ago and I went through hell trying to get a derailleur that actually worked, ended up having to buy one of ebay to get enough parts to build one working one. The schwinn had no brake cable for like a year, and I forgot how the cable got routed so the rear doesn't work well and I need to look up how to do it right.
At least this is cheap compared to the problems I deal with. If I was still patient I imagine I would have a lot of fun getting cheap chinkshit parts directly via slow boat, but I'm too old to deal with that shit anymore.

Posting here instead of /bbg/ because this is more of a general and historical question, I'm not so much looking for advice on a specific bike.
I think it would be fun to have a fairly light, older (80s or 90s) aluminum road or cyclocross bike, for cruising around on, fucking around, and maybe doing some casual cx races on. I would want clearance for at least 33mm tires, I would probably convert to 700c if it's a 27", and I would convert to cassette and indexed shifters if it's freewheel and/or friction shifters. (I love the old stuff, I have an 80s road bike and an 80s mountain bike both of which have freewheels and friction shifters, but that's not the kind of bike I have in mind for what I'm asking about now; likewise, steel is real and I love my 3 steel bikes, but I'm looking for aluminum in this case). I don't care about bosses for a rack, I don't care what kind of headset it is, I'm not too picky on specs.
I would be open to road or cx geometry, ideally somewhere kinda on the border, as long as I can put 700x33c wheels on.
So my questions are these:

I don't see exactly why you'd limit to 80s/90s.
Any canti brake CX bike at this point is basically a classic and they go all the way up to current year. Like pic related.

Also, if you find something racey with higher spec steel, I wouldn't avoid it just because. Like pic related also.
As far back as 70s/80s (and earlier), well, there might not be 'cx' bikes as such but there are short wheelbase light canti stud road bikes with ~32mm clearance that people had as sport-tourers or rando bikes. Same thing basically.

I know personally that a Raleigh Technium Olympian can take 35mm tires. Its a historically interesting bike, can be had cheaply, and was $800 in 1988.

the bolt spacing
typically 110bcd vs 130 bcd meaning mtb triples allow lower gearing in the middle range (38t is the lowest that will fit on 130)
they both typically use 74bcd grannys so that's the same.

road triples also typically have a narrower q-factor meaning your pedals are closer together.

Putting a mtb triple on a road bike is a very common thing.

CX has been a thing for over a century, so CX-specific bikes were always being made here and there, and started appearing as a mass market category in the US in the 80s, Europe in the 70s, I think. "Sport touring" was the gravelmeme back in the day, yeah, and a lot of those bikes showed up at CX events. The Bianchi Eros and Miyata 610 /615 are good examples. Miyata was had a few CX-specific models like the Alumicross in the late 80s. A well-kept one in my size would be an automatic buy.

And now that I'm looking at old Miyatas I kinda want to get this old Omnium just for the ALUMINUM decal. Miyata was so cool. Shame that they're just a shitty Merida brand now.

I have a mbt with a riveted set, and a hybrid with I think might be removable one but looks like it has 5 bolts instead of 4 like you see on cranks people use for 1x conversions.
I was thinking of putting the riveted set on my hybrid and doing a 1x just the front on my mountain bike since I don't use it in as many gears and it would simplify it since I've always had issues with the front, just enough to irritate me.

I'm not dead set on converting to 700c, I'm fine with sticking with 27" if I can find a decent cassette-compatible 27" wheelset. I only have one 27" bike and I run a freewheel on it so I've never bothered to look into whether or not anyone makes 27" wheels for cassettes. I suppose I could teach myself to wheelbuild if nothing else, might be fun.

Those are presta valves and they're common on most higher end bikes, including mtbs. They make it possible to have a smaller hole in your rim for the stem because they're narrower. Mostly they are shit

Check BCD as other anon said, but also check whether it's equal spacing or offset spacing. Some chainrings don't have all the bolt holes equally spaced. I don't recall if offset spacing only shows up in some 4-hole or some 5-hole or if it can show up in both, and I don't know if offsets are always offset by the same amount as other offsets, I just know that some are offset.
Also, chainrings generally have pins and ramps to help make the shifting smoother. The position of the pins and ramps matters. Therefore, if possible, you should find a 36t that is specifically meant to be used with Shimano 46 and 24. This is another thing I don't know all the details on, i.e. do you simply have to look for "designed to be used with 46 and 24" or "designed to be used with Shimano" or both. If you don't mind sloppy shifting it doesn't matter, but if you want nice smooth shifting it does matter.

I have rings without ramps/pins on my old ten speed and it shifts fine, but that's with friction shifters, not sure how well indexed would do.

Not moving when you press the shift lever, or unable to move even if you push it with your hand? If you can move it with your hand but just not when you press the shift lever, you likely have too little cable tension. To set cable tension, make sure your shifter is set to the index where it's supposed to be when you're in the small ring, then pull the cable tight and tighten the pinch bolt. If you can't get it tight enough, you can manually push the derailleur outward slightly as you're tightening the pinch bolt.
If the derailleur can't move even when you push on it by hand, it could be a limit screw issue as you suggested, or maybe there's something jammed in their somewhere or it's hitting something, but I don't see anything like that in your pic.
And you mentioned chain rub. Make sure that your derailleur mount position is at the right height and the right angle.
Was this derailleur working on this bike previously?

Well it's easy to throw money at something when someone else is paying, but what is it realistically worth if it was in good mechanical condition?
I don't want to throw a ton of money at it replacing functionally fine components trying to make it something it isn't. Maybe if it was a fixed front fork since I was looking for old rigid mbt's. To figure out the size you need get a caliper and find the diameter of the one in there (within 0.1mm). Length and offset don't need to match the old one to be usable, as long as it's not too short of course.

I've never paid attention to presta valve cores before but on schraeder it's perfectly normal for the core to back off and become loose sometimes; it's a matter of tightening it again with a valve core tool/jamming in a flathead screwdriver.
Maybe prestas have a similar core that has come undone? That would certainly not be indicative of 'poor quality'

Occasionally on new tubes the valve cores aren't tight and can lose air. First thing I do when I open any new tube is tighten it up if it needs it (use a small adjustable wrench if you don't have the tool). On some tubes the core isn't removable - if there's no flat part for the wrench to grab it's not removable - so if it came off it's just broken. Also the small part on the very tip that you unscrew before you pump air in shouldn't be able to come out at all.

I didn't find them difficult to get used to on pavement, but sometimes new ones are stiff so I did fall over, couldn't get my foot out kek.
For mountain biking I found them more awkward, specifically on uphill because if I got to techy stuff on uphill and quickly had to put a foot down I couldn't. On the downhill it was nice. So I ended up getting a pair for my mtb that is clipless on one side and flat on the other. Crank Bros Double Shot if I recall correctly.

I’m getting really fucking tired of snapping tire levers and popping tubes ever fucking week changing out weekly punctures. I’m trying to ride gp5ks on kinlin xr31 rims. Are there other tires that are easier to fit so I won’t have to go through such a nightmare every week? My wheels are tubeless ready, should I just go tubeless? I’m worried that if I do it’ll just be the same damn shit but now with tire spooge shooting everywhere. But it’s really fucking up my training to put a new tube in after what feels like every ride especially when I pop an extra tube and snap a lever every time. I’m fucking fed up.

Either way, make sure the bead is down in the rim bed as much as possible as you're mounting it to give yourself maximum slack, and probably buy some better levers. I've mounted some cunty tires with mine (pedro's) and after like 5 years they've never shown any signs of bending or becoming flexy or anything.

This particular rim/tire combo is an absolute bitch to fit so I have to do the thing you’re not supposed to do where you flip the lever around to slide it on and I know that pops the tube every time. But you can’t get enough slack to work it on with just hands like I’ve been able to with other rims. I think it’s the tubeless tape. So I’ve either gotta just rip it out and replace it or go tubeless I think.

Whatever I find most comfortable. You should not care what others think, especially where your comfort and health is concerned. Padded bottoms and cycling specific clothing is a plus, but honestly as long as you've got the right saddle you can make almost anything work so long as you are wearing compression underwear.

Get a Kool Stop bead jack. It's a tool that makes installing difficult tires extremely easy and it only costs a few dollars.
Tubeless is a meme if you're riding on pavement.
When installing a tube and tire: First put one of the tire's beads on the wheel. Pump a few psi of air into the tube, just enough for it to take shape. Then put the tube inside the tire, making sure it's not twisted or stretched anywhere, and making sure the valve stem is straight. Then put the tire's other bead onto the rim, getting it started by hand, and switching over to the bead jack once you get enough of it on that it's becoming difficult to go any farther by hand.
After getting the tire fully installed, inspect the rim all the way around on both sides to ensure you didn't pinch the tube under the bead anywhere; you can push inward on the tire to get a better look.
Then start inflating the tire, after putting a bit of air in, inspect both sides of rim again to again ensure that the tube is not pinched anywhere.
Then continue inflating.
Inflate to a high pressure, and check your tire pressure before every ride. Tires lose air over time just sitting, even a few days can make a noticable difference. If you ride at too low of pressure, this can cause the tube to deform any time you hit a bump, crack, pothole, etc which can cause flats, so it's very important to keep tires at proper pressure.
The Kool Stop bead jack will be your biggest help.

how the heck are you getting punctures every week? gp5ks aren't the most puncture-resistant tire but every week is ridiculous. anyway, in addition to that bead jack. tho I never I never use that thing. trick is to pull the outside bead towards the center of the rim, then use your thumb and manly grip to pull the inside bead over the rim. this is also a good massage technique for grumpy girls. use pedro's levers. they are exceedingly difficult to break. panaracer pasela pt folders tend to go on every rim easily and are somewhat puncture resistant but are nowhere near as fast as gp5ks. I feel like they handle slightly better tho.

Fenders will usually say what tires they are for. I.e. "26x2" fenders will work with 26x2 tires. Just make sure you have enough clearance between your chainstays, seatstays, and forkblades.

Yes, I would feel comfortable doing an extended ride on that on 28s even as long as there's not too much loose gravel. I would say go try it out on whatever tires you have now on a day when you're not committed to necessarily doing a long ride, turn back if you're uncomfortable, but chances are you'll very likely be fine. If you do need new tires after trying it, get Pasela PTs in whatever the widest you can fit. As anon said the manufacturers are conservative so if it says 30 maybe you can fit 32, also depends on rim width, but I think 30 would be more than wide enough. I don't recall offhand what widths the Pasela comes in but it comes in quite a few.

Touring isn't the only reason people have for a front rack anon. Some people use a rack/panniers to carry stuff around when they commute, and some hipsters go with front instead of rear. You do have a point but "alu road bike" isn't what comes to mind when I think of touring, but if that's the bike anon already has I obviously would never discourage him from touring on it.

thanks anon I'll keep that in mind, I like panaracer as a brand and I also like tan/amber sidewalls on my bike so if it holds up in actual performance it would be a perfect tyre
I will go try it before buying anything, but it's actually 300km away. I'm moving house across state next month and this rail trail runs right poast my new back garden so I'm absolutely going to be doing big rides on it hence the question

I have Pasela PTs on two of my bikes and they hold up quite well. As I said the regular Paselas get punctures though, it's just the PT versions that hold up well.

The only nitto racks available in the UK now are ridiculously priced (£70).

I don't have much mechanical knowledge.
I am a former NEET who is teaching himself to ride a bike as an adult.
I have a revi Predator, and wanted to put a luggage rack on the back, for holding a toolbox and some ammo cans I would bolt to it.
Does anyone have a suggestion for said rack? Is this a stupid idea? My plan is to drill holes into a shitty plastic toolbox and ziptie it down, and to use pipe brackets for the ammo cans.

most bikes should have enough seatpost to raise the seat height by a couple of inches unless the previous owner cut the seatpost to length

If you have heavy stuff in the racks you could get the Surly rack. It's big, steel, very heavy, most people are better off with a lighter aluminum rack but depending on your specific needs you could consider it

The chain skips in the smallest cog. This is with a 3mm offset chainring - is a 0 offset worth trying, so chainline to the smallest cogs is straighter

I need to swap the chainring anyway, it's a 38T which was dumb, I want to get a 32T

no that's the chainline to the 2nd biggest

I can't work out why the chain skips in the smallest cog (hardest gear). I've tried removing a link and that made it worse. I think the derailleur is indexed ok so the chainring offset is the next thing I'll try.

It's a small frame from when I was a kid, it's a bit short if I want to have my legs fully extended while pedaling, but only by a inch or 3.
Maybe if I was doing jumps or whatever people do on mbt's these days I'd bend it by going longer, but I think I'd be fine.

True. If you're already so desperately elderly and arthritic that you're paying $160 for a suspension stem, you probably aren't concerned enough about performance to pay an extra $70 for the version that *only* weighs as much as two normal stems.

does it have the axle bosses?
tubus makes an adapter for the mid-fork and there are lots of more ghetto solutions like even hoseclamps will work until they break if it's a metal fork.

You can also get full size racks that are for panniers, tubus also, makes one, blackburn outpost, etc.

they're carbon fork blades, there's no way I'm clamping something to them
and if you're talking about this blackburn rack, it also requires mid-fork bosses. don't know which tubus one you're talking about.

I don't remember doing too well in geometry, but even then this looks off. I swamped the stem and bars just to see what I might want to buy, but I'm just more confused. I have the seat higher on it because that's what feels better, but the bars now are kinda low and bit far, what sort of stem/bar would I need to reduce that?
The other one is like the smallest mens frame from 15 years ago, and the 7500 is a womens, so I'm not sure if that has something to play into it.

women's geometry has a shorter reach because shorter torsos and short arms, it shouldn't be too far for you. your saddle should be horizontal btw, not pointing up.

I got the front shiftier working again, wasn't ratcheting to the third position, but I must have pushed the right lever in the internals since it's working again.
Is the chain too long? I pulled the chain and cleaned it in kerosene to test things before getting a new one. It's routed correctly.

Not too far, just don't like leaning forward and down. I'd run out of seat post on other bikes since they were smaller frame, so I'd never hit the point where the seat was above the bars so I'm not used to it.
I've been busy trying to do the functional issues so I haven't adjusted the seat or anything.
