Just downloaded this and I like it so far, but to clarify; hypothetically if I was French and only ever cycled in Brittany or I was an American who never ventured out of state; would there be any reason to pay for any App features?

Are they monetising opensource maps, or not really?

The f droid version is completely free, no in app purchases, just get that. To answer your other question there's nothing that says you can't make money out of open source stuff. Not sure what loicence OSM uses but they all pretty much say "do whatever the fuck you want just give us credit, or don't idc"

Can it track my rides and give me monthly summaries like strava? I hate strava so i refuse to subscribe and they nerfed the free version so bad i cant deal. Really what i want is an app where i can download routes from ridewithgps, have a route loaded while riding, and record my rides. I don't care about segments and shit, just want to know what mileage my bikes have on them

You can get it for free from f-droid and then install the plugins and maps you want manually, you only have to pay if you get it from the google play store, or on iOS I guess.

Many years ago there were some debate in OSM regarding whether distributor need to be noncommercial too, the no side won and thus it's now part of many big company's map product including Apple and Facebook and Mapbox

As people said, F-Droid version is free.
if you use it for your bike, I strongly recommend you to also download BRouter on F-Droid, download whatever maps you need, configure your profile. Then you go back on OSMand, and select BRouter as the engine for bike path. It's compute the path very quickly, select the best roads for you (99% of the time) and take altitude into account.

I don't think I'll bother with Osmand after all. Footpath is good enough for routing, I don't really need turn by turn navigation on a bicycle @10mph. Osmands interface is shitty.

When I used it a few years ago, I had the normal version. You could download maps seperately and put them in a folder such that osmand would recognize them without have to pay for them.
Don't know if that's still possible. A year ago I ditched my smartphone for a dumbphone.

Do you know anything based on Google Maps that allows me to draw my own route even if it's through forests and mountains? I only need an aerial view of my route in Terrain mode, I tried with Google Maps but it can't connect the dots the way I need it. This is an example, I wanted to make way through the forest on the orange route but whenever I place a dot it just keeps jumping back to the main road.

For biking, Orux is better in every way imo.

The shittiness of Osmand's interface is amazing. So many knobs yet I don't think I ever managed to get it anywhere close to being usable.

gmaps don't have all roads and paths like openstreetmap does. You'll have more more chances with https://brouter.de/brouter-web/ and selecting the terrain mode view on the layout (right menu)
I'm not sure that a map exists and permits you to draw a route where there is nothing in the map.
Eventually with OpenStreeMap you can go there and record & publish some modifications on the map so you can have a complete map

OSM has a tool to record your journey and get details about it, like top speed, average, how many time you did a break and it shows your speed according the slopes / altitude.
You don't need to sell out your privacy

I don't mind Strava getting my riding data.
I mean, I am mostly doing the same loops and variations, there is nothing.

I like the scoreboard though even though it's all the detailed stuff are behind a paywall now.
