I look at all the double decker trains that exist for both containers & passengers and I feel like my country is missing out because our overhead lines aren't tall enough.

Yeah I wasn't saying they were any good, and the sad thing is it was literally the best they could do with the loading gauge. Plus if you take away the flip down seats it's more like a 20% increase. The "trial" lasted 22 years though which is quite funny

They could have but they also had to dig an enormous amount of tunnels. Digging tunnels is expensive so you want to make them as small as possible.

Add to that the cost of demolishing lots of houses in already built up cities.
Even in the USA, the routes on the East Coast have to be modified at huge expense to fit double stack trains. West of the Mississippi, cities were built around trains so there was far less work required to upgrade, if it was even needed

Double Decker trains exist all over the world, they are not special. Double decker containers only work in countries without much electrification and lots of rural areas like much of sub-saharan Africa, the US, Canada or Australia.

There are two downsides to these double stacked container trains:
1) For height reasons the containers will preferably be carried in low slung tubs between axle bogeys, not on top of them (so the train doesn't become even taller than it already is), meaning the cars need to be rather long and the clearance radii for trackside objects need to account for these super long cars which likely wouldn't be an option in European rail networks not designed around them.
2) More importantly these trains can only ever share networks with electrified rail or run electric locomotives if all the electrified rails account for their enormous height. India is now starting to run double stacks and is forced to build RIDICULOUSLY tall catenary masts and put ridiculously tall pantographs on their trains to make electrification an option, and in the case of the US the container rail has to exist separately from the electrified passenger rail altogether and will likely never be electrified.

Productivity. Same train crew of 2 carries twice more cargo.
Capacity. There are maybe no place in schedule for more trains. (usually over some bottlenecks)

Length of train is limited by railroad infrastructure. Length of unloading stations and sorting tracks. EU freight train limits is 750 meters, US is 2000.

I don't think they would be long by European standards, just guessing though. They're nowhere close to the longest types of rail cars in North America.

You're instantly halving the volume and doubling crew costs. There's not enough space on US and Canadian railroads to run that many trains since railroads normally build trains to maximum lengths now anyway.

Not really. Double-tracking is really only needed if you have freight heading in both directions on a specific corridor, and there are enough junctions, sidings, and parallel routes that pretty much everywhere that double tracks aren't needed except for urban areas and the heaviest-use corridors.

It's nice, the view is a little better but the main reason is passenger volume since shorter trains have more space for people. You can make a train station only so long so double deckers make a lot of sense or highly frequented lines.
