There are multiple paths to tripling current battery energy density, and extend life to well beyond that of the typical vehicle. Once that happens gas vehicles won't be able to compete for the majority of personal vehicles.

Large cities are going to increasingly forbid the use of ICE in the city center so that will be a big factor in EV adoption. Also if Biden stops subsidizing fossil fuels that will speed up adoption.
