I need to do a full weekly shop on a bicycle. I'm talking jugs of milk, washing powder, bottles, etc. What is the best way to carry it all?

I've been doing all my groceries with a detachable carry frame (Racktime Boxit Large) on my rear rack for the last year and a half. Pic for reference, not my bike, I usually put in a fabric folding box I found elsewhere that just happens to fit perfectly (Meori Large, do not ever use in soaking rain or wash in your shower because it's cardboard reinforced, I made this mistake after spilling something on it) instead of the standard rattly plastic tub that comes with the carry frame.

Upsides: Very sturdy even for carrying 20kg/44lbs worth of soft drinks (rated for 25kg but you could probably stand a person in it). 30L folding box just about works out for a week's worth of groceries for one person, sometimes I need to throw a few items in a backpack.

Downsides: Requires a compatible Racktime rear rack (was shopping for a bike anyway and found a decent one that already had one). With heavy loads it becomes slightly top heavy (noticable during turns but not worryingly or dangerously so). With heavy loads it also becomes very rear heavy (dismounting to lift the front wheel over a tall curb can have the bike wanting to topple over backwards and on one occasion it almost fell over into a parked car because of this).

Alternatives: The internet offers a million ways to fix a milk crate to any rack. A lot of racks are also compatible with pannier bags that cost more and don't fit items as large as milk crates do but offer a lower center of gravity. I've also been thinking about switching to a trailer (only extra part on your bike is a hitch) but I'm not sure it's necessary for my needs or even all that practical to store and use.

Tips: Weight distribution with lots of groceries on one end of your bike kinda sucks. If you're not obsessed with keeping your bike lightweight I suggest you to put both a front rack and a rear rack on it and use any combination of milk crates and pannier bags to distribute the weight along the length of your bike.

I buy some things from shops, stuff that's best fresh and whatnot, but all the other shit I get delivered, tinned and dried foods, household cleaning stuff, stuff for the freezer, alcohol and other drinks, sugar, flour, rice etc basically anything that has a long shelf life and/or is heavy/bulky.
Things like bread, milk, fish and meat I buy myself from local shops and can easily fit it in my modest rear basket.

I'd just like to offer a tip for those using baskets that has made my cycle/shopping excursions so much more enjoyable.

I bought some thin flexible plastic board, about 0.5mm thick, I scored it so it fits inside the bottom of the basket with a lip up either side, this sheet fulfills several roles

>It acts as a fender because I don't like actual fenders, it can be easily wiped down when you clean the bike, no fiddly screws etc
>It stops small items, straps etc that may otherwise fall through the bottom of the basket
>I developed the concept even further by gluing a small old mouse mat on top which also acts as a damper, making the load quieter when riding over bumps and offering a little shock absorption

Please see pic related for more information and feel free to use this idea to help make your basket shopping trips more pleasant all round.

I put a carpet square on top of the rack and under the basket, it reduces rattling and less tension is needed on the cable ties to hold the basket in place
full length fenders do have a small benefit in that they go all the way down to the space between the bottom bracket and the start of the chain stays, this keeps grime out of the FD cables and pivots

Jsut pay for delivery.

Bringing a lot of shopping home on a bike is obnoxious, the bags rub against the wheels and it's all off balance. If you're traveling a long way the bags can rip open from the wheel rubbing.

Those stuff can be carried easily in a pannier. Orlieb do some that you can carry with you easily.

For non eatable stuff, reduce your consumption. I only need to buy stuff every 2 weeks maybe, and everything hold in one pannier

A front basket with a lid is the most secure way to transport things on a bike. You can do with no lid if roads are smooth and you don't jump kerbs.

don't under any circumstances hang bags from your bars. I have done this for years but the other day the bag got sucked into the front wheel. stopped the wheel dead and threw me straight over the bars, chewed up a load of stuff in the bag. bumps and scrapes only fortunately

one of these bikeracks attatches to a regular bookrack. you can get them for like $7 at the flea market. they fit a paper grocery bag pretty welll...
you can stack a a bag in there and then stack more bags on top of it with bungee cords and any extra shit you cant fit on top of that, just slap into a backpack... ive carried some pretty big foodbank hauls this way.

A full week of real groceries in one go is going to be be pretty tough. I shop for myself almost exclusively on bike but plan on every 2-4 days to do some sort of grocery shopping. To get a full week though might require some serious compromise to the quality and freshness of your food - and I am not knocking rice, beans, lentils and dry spices. All that said I use a cheap 50L pannier off amazon on a tubus grand tour rear and then I put a origin8 messenger flat rack on the front on my bike. I can haul quite a bit pretty comfortably and could get several days worth of fresh eats to prepare a number of meals - with having some staples on hand to work with.

i have a pretty big backpack to do some heavier shopping or picking up larger items. I rack helps.
I also swing by the store most days on my way home from work. Getting everything you need in one trip per week sounds rough without a bike trailer or front and rear panniers

From personal experience, these these only exist because grocery delivery execs can force employees to use them or just fire them.

Then fire them for 'poor performance' and replace them when the back problems these thing cause slow them down.
