>Are you forgetting people should be able to walk to the station?I would argue that most potential riders aren't going to be walking around near the station wherever it may be, they're going to want to use MARTA, another transit service, get a taxi/uber, or have someone pick them up/drop them off. If it is successful, then development will spring up around it (according to this board).
The main advantage these sites offer is that they have ample room for multiple tracks and have already long been railroad yards. If there is contamination on them, it won't matter as much versus redeveloping the land for residential/commercial use. Passenger rail isn't as noisy as a freight yard, but people living nearby are still used to having trains running by them.
