Why is air travel so overpriced? As an example, it takes 12 tons of fuel for a 737MAX to fly from New York to Los Angeles, which costs about $6500 at current fuel prices. The plane can fit 178 passengers, which means that at full capacity, the fuel cost is only $36 per person. Yet a one way ticket on that route costs $200 and up. On a flight that's almost fully booked, it's closer to $400. How can the discrepancy between fuel cost and ticket price be this big?
