I grew up riding in sydney city traffic and I never wore a helmet. I only ever got hit once by a car, going through a roundabout and some stupid chink didn't even stop. The car t-boned me but I got another quick pedal in and it clipped my rear. I went flying but I'm a tough cunt and nothing really happened besides a broken thumb.
I still ride every day with no helmet and I wear earphones. But everytime I get on my bike I become hyper aware of my surroundings. I assume every car isn't paying attention. In my 30 years of riding, that;s the only bad hit I've had.

Your parents already wiped your ass and fed you for the first two to three years of your life, why make them do that crap for another 40 then leave it up to the tax payer to pay up a care taker until you finally die? While wearing a helmet is a good idea and can protect you from some cuts, bruises etc. A helmet will not help significantly in any major crash that could cause brain damage. Furthermore, damage to the spinal cord is what usually causes as you say "wheelchair life" and a helmet will not protect you from that (and in very rare cases can even make it worse).

when I was 12 I was riding without a helmet and got tboned. I bumped my head and got knocked unconscious instantly. I wake up again in the hospital right as I'm unloaded from one stretcher to another. The doctor tells me "I have to check for internal bleeding, alright?" then shoves a finger up my butt. If I was wearing a helmet I probably wouldn't have gotten knocked unconscious preventing the whole finger butt thing. Wear a helmet unless you want a surprise fingerbang.

I only wear a helmet when I snowboard because I've had a few concussions. One of my mates was in a car accident a few years ago. He is pretty jacked, been on the gear for a while. When he went to hospital the doc said because he was built like a tank, it saved his life.

You realize this is survivorship bias though right? If you had been hit with a car and sustained helmet-preventable brain damage, you wouldn't be here telling us to wear a helmet. You would be a vegetable. It doesn't matter how tough you are, if you fall on your head without a helmet you die.

a helmet does not stop paralysis or major head trauma. It will only help prevent skull fractures or slightly reduce force on your brain. Lets face it, getting hit by a car at speed and being flung into the air will permanently disable you no matter what you wear.
