advantages like tire clearance, bosses, threadless steerers, lower gearing, STIs, non-worn paint, and non-worn parts, can make a world of difference. Sometimes you don't realise the 'quirks' of an old bike, like gearing not quite working, poor braking or a poor fit, noises, etc, are really glaring flaws until you move on from it.
on the other hand, just planing along, in a gear, or spinning up a hill, not shifting, not braking, just pure riding, you might find a good old bike is truely excellent. So you get on your new 4130 disc marin or whatever that's quite stout and are riding along in that gear, and it's not better. Maybe it's worse. Which might make that new bike seem utterly pointless.
The people they really just make unequivocal sense for are noobs which is ironic because noobs are not going to have the preferences which would point them in the direction of Marin.
