It's such a specialized discipline that not many people spend the cash for the bike unless they're already road racing a lot and doing big enough races to have TT stages.
Triathletes are fucking annoying. They're like 1 small step below cross-fit people. Any dork can sign up for the super short length triathlon for the first time and do it on their hybrid. They do a few and then if they have enough money, they run out and buy a tri bike. The bike leg of the race is probably their weakest skill, but it's fun to buy shiny new equipment. Most of them have no bike handling skills (because again, they aren't bike racers), and I like watching videos of them falling.
