Boston before and after the big dig.
The big dig cost several times what they proposed and did not help traffic.
My opinion is, freeway burial is too costly and doesn’t provide benefits. Just delete the freeway.

If they didn't award construction contracts to friends of the political machine then maybe it would've been completed closer to the budget

Induced demand is a legitimate problem but it has to do with the overall growth in areas, greater economies and traffic patterns, only mass transit midwits simplify it to "highways don't help".

That's a false dichotomy- the "induced demand" is caused by preference of one transit method over another.

Your food example doesn't work, because people need food- there's no alternative.
