Anyone spouting the shite about wider tyres having lower rolling resistance than narrower ones needs to remember that that's at equivalent pressure. You run narrower tyres at higher pressure so they will still be faster than wider tyres. And that's before you even begin to take aerodynamics into account, where narrower tyres are always faster.
You can make whatever arguments for comfort you want, but narrower and higher pressure are always faster. FACT
