Help an anon out with converting to trailer life with his wife. We're done with apts and housing is fucked here. Any advice, tips, and recommendations wholeheartedly appreciated. Limits are 5k lbs and 20 foot. Looking for something smallish. Don't need anything fancy, just durable, insulated, and reliable

We're definitely trying to be realistic about it. We're going to have to live in a trailer or shed etc for a while so i can build my house a few years from now anyway. So we just see it as a head start if we go this direction

And it will cost you that of a small trailer park level house before you even get anything. The shit you're probably looking at on craigslist isn't something you can fix or maintain with basic mechanic skills as they are completely different beasts. You're basically going to put down the money that could be used for a down payment on a house, just to attempt and "save" some money. You're not going to get anything 20ft for under 20k that can be considered reliable as there will be something wrong with it. Most likely it's been sitting for so long that bugs, mold, rust, or something has started to corrode it. Most people selling these RV's for dirt cheap often got it looked over and just wanting to get rid of it due to insurance costs adding up.

This, rent one and see how much a pain in the ass it is to live in one for a week. I can all but know instantly that the bathroom section will be a killer for you and her if you plan to have any kind of job. Hope you enjoy the fresh smell of whatever the prior owner dealt with along with insane amounts of BO not going anywhere. Everything you cook, everything you shit, and everything you bring into the RV will stink it up and cleaning is a bit fair tougher than your forgivable apartment/housing material.

Realistically, you're going to be dropping about 20-25k on it for anything well equipped and with current tags as a minimum. You'll probably want to do some preemptive maintenance on it to be safe since anything used probably got a look-over from the seller and went "looks fine to me!". This is /biz/ levels of "I JUST NEED TO SPEND MORE SO I CAN MAKE A BUNCH ONLY WAY IS UP!"

I'll look into rental first. A good idea. While used are an option I'm also fine with looking at new trailers to avoid the aforementioned previous owner issues. Realistically i was looking in the $20-30k range since we have good credit and can finance for cheap
