the Kevlar under the traction surface seems to do ok but the sidewalls are still vulnerable to smaller pieces of glass
but one of my bikes has only 2 mm of clearance between the tire and fork crown, so a lot of detritus gets caught there
maybe I chop up an ice cream container lid and attach it to the brake fixing bolt, but this will need some shaping

I'd ride in the rain more if I could see without glasses. My glasses immediately get covered in water, then when I wipe them they smear so I'm looking through a haze.

You do need to give the drivetrain a quick wipe down / lube after riding in the rain otherwise the chain will be rusty the next day.

Rain is not that hard on hardware. Now Salted snow slush, that's a real bother. I commute everyday by bike even in the depth of Winter so at the end of the season my drivetrain is busted at a minimum. One particularly awful Winter the slush even ate away the bearings of my bottom bracket and my headset.

Sorry, I didn't address that part because I assumed it was a given. Use a lube suited for wet weather, retard. I use finish line wet lube and it lasts about 400 km in the rain. Yes, the chain turns black quite quickly but it stays perfectly lubricated throughout. Then use a good degreaser (morgan blue) to clean it, which takes about 10 minutes

If you have such a shit quality bike that you can't take it in the rain without the bearings getting flooded, or you don't understand how to maintain your bike, maybe you're right and you really should be keeping it dry.
When the roads are salted you might see increased wear if you don't know how to wash a bike, but I'm sure yours sees plenty of salt every time you ride it so that's nothing out of the ordinary

it's a little more than that buddy. the derailleur jockey wheels grind all the organic matter into a horrible paste that builds up, you can wipe some of it off just by pinching the jockey wheel with a cloth while you turn the pedals, but to do a decent job you need to be take the chain off. same goes for the thick black paste in the cassette

Yeah that only works if there are seals sufficient to keep all water and foreign matter from entering, and so long as you don't mind the whole bike being that much heavier and being stuck with a single-speed.

I waxed my chain, casette and chainrings and there is zero rust or excess wear on any of those parts even after a full salty winter of riding, nevermind some measily rain. Full coverage fenders prevent hubs and bottom bracket from getting drenched, prolonging their life. Fully sheathed cabling doesn't add much weight but provides weather protection. A bit of grease smeared under the headset bearing cover and on the seatpost clamp prevents water ingress. Disc brakes don't care about rain, neither does an aluminium frame. Short of throwing it straight into a river, my bike is impervious to water.

Don't buy a bike with a heavy frame then? The gearbox is a bit heavy, but cleaning the bike with a belt drive and encapsulated gears is a piece of cake compared to cleaning all the exposed parts that don't like mud/sand.
You won't do KOMs in the rain, anyway, so the added weight doesn't really matter.
