Even a foldie is better, if only for comfort and storage dimensions. And yes, I have experience with both.

The only thing I like about BMX bikes are the crossbar. Everything else about those bikes are garbage, they are literally the toy version of a bike meant for skateparks and not commuting. My commuter bike is a rigid 80's mtb with slick tires and BMX bars, upright riding position, cushy saddle, and plenty of room on the bars for random accessories and lights. Also having a cassette/freewheel with friction shifting is basically maintenance free too.

No, BMX pre dates "dirt jump bikes" by about 20 years. Those dirt jump bikes are basically just mountain bikes with different geometry.

i just got one for my 7yo daughter and she loves it
she named it 'Oliver'
it's a bit oversized for her still but she's much faster on this than her friends on their mtb or whatever with all the bells and whistles, and it's unbreakable
i can even stand on the rear pegs and ride with her!
also, the rotor is cool

this, with a stupid long seatpost and a quick release you can go from fun machine to comfy commuter in a second. i only own a track bike and a 26" dj and i assure you could cover basically any cycling need you could have if you are fit/crazy enough
