I'm thinking about joining a road cycling club but I'm not sure if I'll be taken seriously since I have a 2nd hand budget road bike. It's aluminium with a carbon fork, pretty good condition and I put a pair of Gatorkins on it. I'm just kinda worried that people won't take me seriously cause I can't afford to spend 2k just now on something better. FYI I have a BTWIN Triban 500 (cheers to everyone who replied with such great detail on my last thread - honestly... thanks guys!). Aren't those kinda clubs a bit materialist and wanky?

That is a fucking excellent bike, one of the best in the budget category. You shouldn't be embarrassed about it. I assume it comes with Sora, Tiagra or 105, those are the same as the high end stuff but not as light. It's a good bike, riding with friends is much better than alone.

literally this. I use a "double" (triple but with only 2 chainrings attached) with no FD
99% of the time I'm in the big ring, even for steep hills. but I can manually drop it into the small, which I've only done once, on like a 30%, since I set the bike up like this. So effectively I have a 1x, but I can very quickly swap the chainring
gearing is 40 (or 30)x11-34 if you're interested. 8 speed. that's right get mad.

Depends on distance, hills and winds. To sustain that as an average for 5-6 hours on a ride with frequent climbs you need to be moderately fit at least. A serious club will have a pace faster that this.

What do you mean by 'road cycling club'?
That could mean just a group of recreational cyclists who like to ride together, or it could mean a road racing team.
Either way no one should give you any shit unless you're literally a dangerous person to be riding near or you're just a complete jerk no one wants to be around.

This is false. I missed out on a local race because the 75 person cat 5 field filled up weeks in advance. It’s all young guys who got into cycling from the internet and youtube, and in my experience they’re all friendly and out to have fun, no pretentious banter or gearfagging just cool guys who want to ride. There are lots of qts in the female fields too.

Well as a "rona rider" myself with a cheap aluminum road bike with tiagra groupset my experience was basically that you will get alot of banter and teasing with everything you do but if people see you not being a pussy whining or quitting and keep up eventually they will start to give you advice and complements if you do things right.
Just accept you are the new guy you will get teased and you need to learn so pay attention to the other riders.
Also avoid being the last guy in the group or you'll soon hear someone say "hey wait up for the old man he cant keep up" or maybe its just in my group.
