>>1675682>Refuses to link the two lines, scrap any plan for itwell, first there are the 'physical practicability' problems. the link between the Euston leg of HS2, and the St Pancras leg of HS1, would cross an incredibly busy residential/commercial area in Camden. now, the nearby London Underground station in Camden is vastly beyond capacity for various reasons - so if there are to be any highly-disruptive construction works, local politics means that they'll of course prioritise something from which the local community will benefit (ie better local transport links). see the attached image? the east-west red line shows where the link would need to cross (with road closures, demolitions, viaduct widening and track laying etc). the yellow circle is the Camden Town tube station complex that need to be entirely rebuilt.
secondly, there are the political problems. so long as the UK remains outside the Schenzen Zone - thus requiring border checks and security clearance (luggage and vehicles) - a simple, convenient HS2->HS1 link is impossible unless all HS2 stations have staffed immigration facilities, security equipment, etc. if you've ever gotten off the Eurostar in London, you may have noticed it's a few minutes' walk through corridors before finally passing through the Arrivals doors. this is because, by UK law, there must be sufficient space to keep the entire train contained following arrival, in case there's a security incident.
