Everyone knows that statistically flying is safer than driving, but what about compared to other forms of mass transport? I never hear about 3 figure death counts from bus crashes.

You certainly do hear about incidents where buses killed dozens of people at a time. This happens multiple times every year.

Shit, I was just reading about one yesterday. Up in Canada a Seikh fellow took out an entire junior Canadian hockey team.

Depends on whether you count distance covered or time spent. Planes looks super safe and walking super unsafe per mile because of the vast differences in speed, but things become slightly more attuned if you go by hour. Though I'm not sure anyone has ever compiled a comparison based on time.

Flying is not safer than driving. Being at high altitudes exposes you to lots of radiation, flying is one of the reasons cancer rates are going up despite things like cigarettes that doctors claimed were responsible no longer being as popular

Land transportation (except trains) have more retarded pilots, but lack enough safety features to compensate for it.

Yeah the whole "flying is the safest way to travel" shit is just propaganda. In addition to what other people have mentioned, one thing to consider is that the risk of driving is different from person to person. If you're someone who doesn't speed or drive drunk or text while driving, always wears your seatbelt, is educated on hazards like black ice, dangerous curves, etc, and you get a big, heavy car like an SUV, then your risk while driving is way below average.

Whereas, there's not much you can do to improve your chances as a flight passenger.

Firstly you pick up an area like North Americ or Europe.
Then you move the goalposts a bit, like: Andreas Lübitz killed 149 people plus himself, but that was no crash, that was controlled flight into terrain.

So you calculate how many planes went down due to defects in the last 10 years and add the dead.

Now you take all bus crashes in the last 10 years, which have less casualties per crash, but happened more often.

If busses killed 502 people and planes 500, is plane statistically safer.

The passengers who tend to perish in a plane crash also tend to be the middle class and up. They are people going on exciting vacations with their loved ones or are just random dudes seeking new frontiers to explore. Unfortunately some overlooked mechanical defect or unforseen human error dooms them to a demise that always leaves their bodies , burnt, fragmented, naked or unrecoverable. Personally i loathe inflight turbulence at cruising altitude as inflight break up of large passenger planes due to explosive decompression is a paticularly nasty death.

The graphics says, rail killed only 6 passengers. Aviation even doesn't recognize passengers, but Wiki says that in 2013 Asiana went down with 3 passengers dead and some private charter in Alaska killed 9 passengers, making rail with 6 dead passengers safer than air with 12 dead passengers...
