ITT: we share the "best" Amtrak stations from across America

I'll begin with Houston, Texas. Pop. ~7 million (fourth largest city in the USA)

Houston sees six trains per week. Eastbound departures scheduled for 12:10pm; westbound departures scheduled for 6:55pm.

Third, Buffalo-Depew. This is actually one of two stations in Buffalo. It sees eight trains daily, but is the only station the Chicago-NYC Lakeshore Limited stops at due to track arrangements.

You can barely see the station in the background.

Although this station does see four trains daily, all departure times are between 1am and 5am.

Detroit has, in my view, the absolute saddest Amshak simply because of what it replaced. Here is the former Michigan Central Station, in use until 1988.

Milwaukee built a prairie style station by the airport some years ago. The brick color choice is sterile but it’s surrounded by native plants and i really like it. I think it’s one of the busiest unstaffed stations in the country.

Stanwood, Washington is actually a newer station. It opened in 2009.

Under normal operations it sees four Cascades trains daily. Two southbound and two northbound. It has not seen any service since the Canada-USA border was closed to non-essential travel in March 2020.

Don’t have a pic but the Amshack in Ann Arbor, MI sees a lot of passengers daily with the big university there, but it looks like the bathrooms at a highway rest stop. Next door is the old Michigan Central depot, a classic example of Railroad Romanesque architecture that’s now a fancy restaurant.

Where is there to go? Amtrak hasn't bothered to reopen the rest of the Sunset Limited (used to go from LA to Florida, now goes to New Orleans) after Katrina. Even Bush in his last year of office (a few years after the track got restored and freight on the CSX track resumed) gave Amtrak 9 months to get their shit together and send a plan back to Congress, which never happened.

San Antonio's Amtrak station is adjacent to a big convention center/hotel and a sports stadium, but there's almost no cities between them to justify the distance. There used to be a Dallas route that stopped at College Station and Corsicana in the late 1980s and early 1990s but the ridership there was even more abysmal and they cut that one.

There is absolutely no use case for Scamtrak in Texas. All the infrastructure is built for low-speed rail, and all the major metro areas anywhere near Houston (Austin, San Antonio, DFW, New Orleans) have little mass transit and are going to take all day to get to at <60mph stopping in every one-hitch town on the way. So they just have enough service to claim it exists so the government can keep funneling tax money into it.

How about stations that are functionally Amshaks?
Cincinnati Union Terminal is gorgeous and massive, but it gets two trains coming through a week. Functionally, the facility exclusively operates as a (admittedly top-tier) museum center with a little Amtrak station in the ass.

Most of these shacks should not be replaced. They should be eliminated. Just took one of Amtrak's western lines the other week and the whole thing's a joke. You stop in these little podunk towns because of their "rail history" and so that the amtrak workers can take a cigarette break. It's embarrassing.

The Amtrak Station for Norfolk, VA is recent construction, so it's pretty nice. It's in the parking lot of Harbor Park (baseball field) and the surrounding neighborhood is kinda sketchy, but there's daily service to Washington DC and NYC.

On the platform of the current Five Points transit hub you can see the leftover wall from the old Atlanta Union Station that was demolished in 1972. Downtown used to have a lot of train tracks but today there's just a few lines and they're all under the new downtown that was built towards the end of the century.

The glass overhangs are a new addition that came with the new station. Before, it was just the platform, as 2011 pic related shows.
The top of the station is the City Hall.
The station neighborhood also has a parking garage, a regional bus hub, a bicycle trail connection, a roundabout, multiple hotels, restaurants, etc.
The area is quite decent urban planning/revitalization.

It's not just ADA, old stations normally need a lot of work to bring them up to modern specs and codes, they probably all have asbestos in them too. Restorations take way more money than new builds in most cases, I'd say

The station in Brattleboro, Vermont is a combination of a nice station and a shack. You can catch the train south to NYC, and north to Burlington, although there's talk of bringing back the old end of the line, Montreal, QC, which was awesome.

*In this era there was another line that went into the mountains toward Stratton, Vermont, to move passengers and granite, which used to be big business. A lot of the monuments in DC were made with granite from a strange mountain known as "Black Mountain" that made its way through here, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The passenger line had to deal with so much snow that they would sometimes get stuck for days in the middle of nowhere. The passengers would have to find wood to keep the stoves going as they waited for things to calm down enough for the plow to get close to them.
