where do I start for learning about city infrastructure and city planning in regards to transportation?
I always hear citys and suburbs are designed like shit but how do I actually learn so I can understand why and why not? You guys got any online resources or suggestions?

op: you're unlikely to get a clear, definitive, simple answer without delving deep into dry academic research articles etc.

you might soak up some useful information from youtube talking heads though? - i'm subbed to RMTransit on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/c/RMTransit) - it's from a mainly Canadian perspective, but he seems passionate about mass transit in general.

Read up on the countless scientific studies from across the world on the relationship between population density and crime, depression, mental illness, even children being disruptive in class. Pop urbanism books aren't a bad place to start to get introduced to the concepts and ideas of planning and urbanism. They're only bad if you build your whole concept of urban planning around it. Jane Jacobs isn't bad either, though she's practically a meme at this point.

They're designed to be preferential to cars to the extent people who live there tend to be reliant on it.

Eco Gecko did a series called Suburban Wasteland about it. It's pretty good and pretty comprehensive. The channel has a pretty left wing perspective, but the Suburban Wasteland series isn't really hyper-political. If you tend to be more conservative, Strong Towns also provides a lot of good content regarding why suburbs suck from a more fiscal conservative position.

Visit different types of cities and decide on your own accord what you think a good urban environment is. I don't think there's a wrong way to design a city as long as it's safe and sustainable. User needs differ from person to person. People are really too quick to write off alternative solutions.

Not that anon, but I've read some Strong Towns stuff, and it's not so much conservative as not as insane (as in, not having a massive hateboner toward cars, etc.). I find it absurd when anyone talks about how more "walkable" their city could/should be without addressing or mentioning the homeless problem that pervades so many of the inner city areas.

Mostly West Coast, but panhandlers tend to intimidate people. Having safe sidewalks is a priority, and as much as people bitch about it, cars are predictable for the most part, and following signals helps ensure safe passage. Panhandlers and other homeless types aren't nearly as predictable or easy to read, yet they never come up in making cities "more walkable", it's always something something cars.

My city has a fuckton of homeless and they're a non-issue because they don't bother anyone they just sleep on the floor and aren't even in the way. First think about what you need to survive and like to do and think about how your lived facilitates that or harms it. Next in your daily living observe the built environment around you and try to understand what works for your needs in terms of utility and aesthetics and lastly look up some urbanism youtubers like Eco Gecko, Not Just Bikes, g16sley, City Beautiful, Bicycle Dutch, Streetfilms, The Urban Doctor, RMTransit, Strong Towns, and donoteat01. Keep an open mind but also don't believe anything you hear.

What you mean? My point is that I’m the US, people who live in dense cities are less happy. In Europe, people who live in dense cities are the least happy. Living in dense urban cities makes your life worse no matter how they’re planned.
