What is actually happening about level crossings? Network rail says they will either remove or upgrade level crossings but I have no idea how many are likely to be removed and how many are likely to be upgraded. And other than the government in Victoria, Australia and France what other countries have similar plans?

Pretty sure it's the inevitable conclusion of wanting to make rail travel safer and quicker. Look at American cities where trains have to traverse level crossings every quarter mile in the suburbs so the entire section is limited to 30 mph and half an hour of endless honking to get across town. And despite the caution and 140 dB horns morons still manage to cut trains off or get their semi trucks beached.

Railroads in the US have been aggressive about removing redundant crossings in the last 20 years or so

I actually really hate these tourist narrow gauge/steam railways with a passion. Same goes for the standard gauge "heritage railways", I can't put my finger on why but it all just seems really sad.

You're two years late, anon. At least, as far as their main programme of works goes; it might be that, for example, after a spate of accidents at a crossing, they'll say 'hold on maybe we're better off closing this' etc

I know they've already closed down level crossings. But anyway you're saying they're only closing down crossings with a record of accidents and upgrading twice as many?

well, reading the website, they're done with their last upgrade/close campaign. they still maintain and risk-assess the remaining level crossings, though, so if anything arises that affects crossing users, they're duty bound to manage that risk.
