Why are there so many modern/recent shipping accidents in the English channel? Are the pilots retarded or is the weather just unbelievably dangerous in that region?

It's one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, with constant perpendicular traffic. Think of it like a busy crossroads with no stop signs or traffic lights, of course there are going to be accidents. But like the other guy said, I'm not aware of any increase in accidents.

never heard of taking pilot to cross the channel
worked in the north sea and English channel for 5 years.
read a report that most of the accident are due to crew fatigue as all ports are technological advanced and loading unloading cleaning etc is done fast. crew has no time to rest. and most of the accidents happen coz of oow sleeping or doing paperwork.
