What are the most essential things for you when looking for a mountain bike?

Are there certain brands, materials or specific part manufacturers you recommend?

I'm looking for a used full suspension bike and wondering what to get. Are there 'most bang for buck' brands in terms of MTBs? Is carbon really a thing in this field?

there's very little about bicycles that's good/bad including brands, it's mostly all preference, use case, and functions of price. So vague advice is pretty much useless.
You didn't even say roughly how much you want to spend or what you'll be using it for.
Infact the advice you'd probably get here, assuming a few things, is -not- to buy a full suspension mountain bike. Which isn't helpful right?

Really the best you'd get would be if you found some viable options we could give opinions on them and maybe help you choose between them. And seeing as you made your own thread about this once you've bought the bike you can post your impressions of it and some pics from riding it and some pics from doing some maintenance on it.

Probably Specialized/Trek/Giant or similar big brand. It's hard for smaller brands to compete with that scale. But of course botique brands or even second tier brands like Kona or Santa Cruz are cooler.

It's actively bad on balance. If solely because it adds a significant amount of weight, which is one of the main differences between better/worse bicycles and how fun they are to ride/ live with.

Depends what riding you do. For a pure mtb is different from a bike you're doing a lot of commuting on. You can get full sus that is reasonably light, even XC fags use them now.

Fucking Harley's don't have full suspension. Your bike doesn't need it. Hardtail is the most you'd ever need in 99% of cases. Full sus. is for extremely limited use cases and even then is never completely necessary.

full sus is great even for relatively tame trail riding, it's just that you have to spend a lot before you can get a good version of it and on cheaper bikes it's much better to put the money elsewhere.
