they are what we have instead of walmart/decathlon bikes because the market is dominated by cycleurope and department store copycats and people ride old hand me down bikes which never get disposed
even if you leave them at the dump or abandon them, they get tuned up and resold to students
but these days it's very very common for people to ride newer hybrid bikes with derailleurs, people aren't buying a lot of dutch bikes new, they get them for free from their parents etc
