I mean how do people not get sunburn? Do they seriously cover their whole bodies with sunscreen? Seems like a pain in the ass, especially if you're out there all day or multiple days.

Lots of sunscreen every 90 minutes. Yeah you’ll look like a dork but you’ll get to sail and not have sunburns which feels like cheating.
Just sign up for lessons. Sunfish are pretty easy. Make sure you ask how to handle docking and launching alone in case you think you’re now smart enough to handle it. I feel bad for the guy who owns the sunfish I rented by myself after my lesson, he was really nice though.

Thats why you wear a wetsuit and on top of that a windstopper. You will have neoprene shoes as well to keep your feet warm.

If you fall in the water offcourse you'll feel the cold water slap, but you'll eventually put your dingy upright and resume sailing. You are not gonna spend more than 5 min in the water.

If you are really afraid of cold you can go for a full waterproof suit but those are really expensive and make your movement goofy.

Yeah! I'll get some more photo's when I check on it. I just use a camping stove but she has a sink.

It's got a queen size mattress in the bow birth. Room for 2 single births aft.

Has a toilet that ditches to the sea as god intended.

Inboard engine is basically just ballast but the outboard pushes her along pretty well.

I lived on her for 2 weeks at the mooring as my work is so close by. Done a bit of overnighters around the harbour but keen to get her out into the ocean.

Cool you need the inside engine to run so at least you have some power generation if you want to have a fridge onboard and some other small quality of life things like a bilge pump and a water pump for taking a shower/washing the boat..

I have a solar panel for bilge and navigation lights (LED).

Solar panel charges a spare motorbike battery I have. I sometimes use it for my phone but barely need it. Good for cabin lights (USB LED).

Freshwater for washing.. haven't bothered with a shower yet as I just go into work and use theirs.

I'll probably get a solar shower when she is ready for sea.

Need a new alternator, exhaust mixing elbow etc for an 80's yanmar... don't know if it will even run well.

It's a lot easier than you would think! Small skiffs like your photo are perfect to learn with. You can honestly pick up sailing within a few hours it's just the daunting terminology that takes years.

Of course it does, but that is regardless of skin type. That's a truck driver btw, not someone who got a tan and decided to live in a sun-climate. Once your melanin levels are up you have the same protection level as hispanics and arabs. Can't achieve full blackness though.

Regardless of sun exposure, how hard is it to get proficient in sailing in say 5 years, with the intention of sailing open seas from Europe to the USA and eventually around the globe?

This doesn't seem out of reach at all honestly, as long as you keep with it and practice. That's my plan with the local lake yacht club. Membership includes time on a 42' for coastal sailing, open to members who've passed the basic coastal cruising and bareboat cruising courses. I'm planning to get the basic coastal cruising by next year, and bareboat cruising the year after at the latest, having started this summer with sailing.

Quality over time.
Take courses, practice a lot even in raugh seas. Couple of years if you are working meantime and you would be ready.

Ocean crossing is not that hard. Hard part is sailing in crowded or shallow/tidal waters.

$1800 to get her cleaned and defoul coat
Currently trying to fabricate a grudgeon for the rudder

I'm 27, been sailing most of my life.
Got diagnosed with skin cancer earlier this year. It was only melanoma in situ so it hadn't gone down deep into the skin but it was still a bit of an oh-fuck moment for me.

This past summer I've worn long-sleeve shirts (those super breathable ones someone already mentioned) and a bucket hat. That way I've found I only have to put sunscreen on my face, hands and lower legs which really isn't much of a pain in the ass at all - takes like one or two minutes at most. Now that summer is basically over I'm still pretty pale - a lot more so than I would have been after a normal year so I've definitely received less UV. I also haven't burned myself at all this summer.

I've probably been really unlucky, after all cancer kinda works that way, but I'd still recommend everyone to be aware of the sun and what it can cause now that I've had to go through having the cancer removed.

No, no chemo or radiation thankfully.
Since it was only in the surface of the skin all they did was cut it away and verify that there were no cancer cells in the deeper layers.
So I have four new ~1 inch scars in various places on my body and one ~4 inch one on my back.
