---Australia -- Because they have like 4 Cities -- that is it. so link Chicago, New York, Boston, Washington DC and you have Australia
--Germany--- You had a benovolent dictator ( Kaiser ) wo saw the Railway as a great strategic asset for mobilizing the army, also a way to link all the German speaking states together.

Japan -- Volcanic islands so all the rails go through the valleys and along the coast -- also all the cities are in valleys or along the coast

Moe trains aren't going to make the long haul routes more viable.
Aircraft are much better for passenger traffic over those distances. No need to maintain the track between each city, and they have a time premium in comparison to trains too.
VIA should focus on building a high speed link along the corridor, where the bulk other ridership and revenue comes from. Then aim for the luxury rail cruise market along the other routes.

how come pretty much every modern Australian train has a similar body style?
Not sure what it's called, but I mean the way the sides of everything (even the XPT carriages) look like they're made of corrugated iron.
is there a climate or regulatory reason, or is it just a coincidence because they're all made in the same factory, or what?

You're forgetting American politicians would rather dump billions of dollars into bombing the shit out of developing countries than fix their crumbling infrastructure, and when politicians do vote on infrastructure improvements, it's mostly for interstate highways that don't fucking need any more than a re-pave every decade or so

I know the XPT carriages are based on American Budd designs, which were famous for the corrugated sides. Interestingly that makes them cousins of Amtrak stock, and as an American with a penchant for British trains it's always weird seeing pictures of XPTs because it looks like somebody hooked HST locos up to an Amtrak train.
Not sure about the other stuff though.

It should be noted that most of these were built by Comeng. Doing some digging around I found this doco which shows them making corrugated stainless steel sections. I would assume it's due to some strength requirement. Someone more autistic than me can dig deeper.

In the big cities, yeah. Outside of them not so much. Too much empty space to justify using long distance public transport. Bits of NSW, WA, QLD and VIC have trains from the main cities to the regional ones.

Canada is on the same boat as the USA desu.
Ireland also has some shoddy public infrastructure. I dont know about their intercity trains, but Dublin lacks a metro and only had 1 tram last time I visited.

Aus here. We have a tiny population compared to something like the north-eastern US and if you draw a line going through Brisbane -> Sydney -> Melbourne -> Adelaide, the distance between each city varies from 700-900km with fuck all in-between (maybe Ballarat, Canberra, Wollongong and Newcastle are of note).

That's a pretty long distance for high speed rail to be effective. Personally as a Sydneysider I would be happy with HSR connections to canberra, Wollongong and Newcastle from Sydney

Intracity is actually super variable in the US. You may be thinking all American cities have a comparable standard of mass transit, which would be low, but very few have even similar layouts to their transportation set ups.
For instance, Chicago and New York have very developed intra-city railways which connect most of their city to the point owning a car in either would be a luxury. Contrary to this, any town under 100,000 is going to only have buses for their public transportation. Depending on factors like the degree of centralization, state/federal-level grants for transportation, or even the talent in city hall's engineering office will determine how expensive a city's transportation will cost. Based on those (and other) factors, a mass transit system may or may not be worth the expense.

That sort of tends to be true in many other parts of the world except when there's a good reason otherwise (such as it being convenient to do as part of a wider regional plan).

I lived for a while out in the Chicago 'burbs. You needed a car out there. Closer into Downtown might be different.
