>>1690065>apples to orangesThe forces in a typical bike accident are nowhere near as harsh as a car crash. A bike crash involves both less mass and speed, hence less force. A bike helmet offers your head (brain) much more protection against hard surfaces your likely to hit than just your bare skull and skin. Bike helmets are a terrific idea. However, wearing a racing helmet without a HANS can be dangerous. Racing helmets weigh much more than a bike helmet, and can actually interfere with the systems already in your car to decelerate your body, namely your airbags. Helmets make cars much safe, but only if a proper cage and HANS devices are used. Using a racing helmet without it being setup properly can be more dangerous than no helmet at all. Don’t believe me, ask Dale Earnhardt.
>hurr NASCAR is faster than a street, that’s not the same eitherThis isn’t even taking into account other things, like severely reduced visibility, making you essentially blind to anything not immediately in front of you, the increased risk of your head making contact with the top of the vehicle during a rollover (which again, without a cage to protect you, can kill you as well), and the risk of interfering with airbags, not allowing them to properly inflate and stop your body fast enough.
