this. Many decades ago the safety bicycle has reached a point where no major innovations are possible to increase efficiency.
Maybe recumbent cycles will be more popular for commuting, assuming non motorized and non autonomous vehicles will be still allowed on the public highway

Modern bikes don't look much different to bikes from 100 years ago, i don't think they will be muich different in 100 years. I don't think there are too many drastic improvements you can make to bicycles

Is this the absolute optimum design or is there not enough (financial) motivation to design beyond what we already have and instead just add on. If you asked a design engineer to build a 2 wheeled pedal powered conveyance and they had never seen or heard of any kind of existing 'cycle or other wheeled object, what would they come up with?
