I like shark-teeth yield marking more than white upside-down triangle + double white dashed lines give-way though. Although I don't know how well they work with hump triangles.

They're for bicycles and motorbikes. A solid white line you can't overtake by going over the line, however bicycles and motorbikes can filter past cars without going over the line.
Jagged lines like that no overtaking or filtering under any circumstances. Pedestrians don't necessarily cross exactly on the crossing and often weave throug stopped cars.

At least that the rule in Bongland

I went to check my highway code from 2007 and zig zag markings around crossings don't seem to be mentioned at all. Do they have any actual meaning anymore.

yes, they do: the zig-zag lines are there to indicate that you MUST NOT park or overtake in that area, the bold caps-lock MUST NOT phrasing meaning that it's written into law rather than being just a 'strong advisory'.

in fact, i'm now just wasting my morning browsing through the Highway Code. and, in a decade and a half on the road, i don't think i've *ever* come across an equestrian crossing; like i'm struggling to imagine a place that's both busy with equestrian traffic, and busy with road traffic, enough to justify a controlled crossing like this.

I managed to skip over that, right at the bottom on its own in this book. Thanks anon. I don't think I've seen an equestrian crossing either and I grew up around stables.

NZ don't have lines like these retard, this is in the UK.
However, Australia (NSW at least) has got "Dragon tails" as they were called when first introduced in some areas where there's a school zone/crossing. NZ just relies on speed postings on the ground and sometimes red tarmac
